Today we’d like to introduce you to Bennett Breslow
Hi Bennett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From a young kid I was singing. I was raised in New York City and music was something that always was an influence in my life. My parents loved music and it was constantly playing. I started making my own songs at 17 years old, but I got my official start as a musician in terms of career base in 2013 after a year of working as a Justin Bieber Impersonator. I got into a studio and started making music professionally. I spent the next 14 years making singles and several EP’s, doing performances across the east coast, and had a lot of fun doing it. I found it necesarry to learn how to make music myself so I studied through Berklee on a Music Business certificate course. I also learned how to mix and master, do my own photo/video shoots, graphic design, etc. I did it all, I was my own everything in terms of creating and executing. I also worked with some incredible artists along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been far from smooth, but I think that’s part of the journey of a musician. I had many battles from people taking advantage to learning the hard way, but I’m better for it. It helped me grow not just as an artist but as a person. I learned who not to trust, red flags when they first appear, and to keep your circle close knit. There is a lot negativities too that can effect one’s mental health so making sure that you’re taking care of yourself is really important.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For the last 20 years I’ve been a Pop R&B artist. I’ve made roughly 50 songs. Some songs that gained traction are “Waiting”, “Lightning”, and “This Space”. I’m getting ready to release my next album called “One For The Road” which will be out June 28th. Something I’m most proud of is in 2023 my song “Waiting” was nominated for Song of the Year at the Wavy Awards. That song means a great deal to me so to have it nominated was really special. What sets me apart are a couple things. For starters I’m transgender. Being a transgender artist has brought it struggles not just from a societal standpoint but from a physical one too. Having vocal changes due to hormones, body changes, etc. My life changed as an artist when I decided to transition. And secondly, I’m currently transitioning in another way, a new position, the CEO of my own tech startup called KnoPlay. The last 2 years I’ve been building a company that is going to provide advanced technologies via sustainable resources and operations through video games and technology of the future. We will be launching early June 2024 as we prepare to start looking for investors.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I learned is that a music career, or any career for that matter, isn’t black and white, that there are many hats, roles, and situations that will arise. So I learned that adaptability to the moment and what it brings is so important. And with that comes hard work, an undeniable amount of hard work. My entire music career taught me to be resilient, to keep going and push through regardless of the situation.
