Today we’d like to introduce you to Atticus Adams.
Atticus, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, actually, I tried not to be an artist. I majored in the health sciences in college so that I would be able to support myself with a stable job when I graduated. I hated the work – but it allowed me the funds to travel and explore creative life options. I checked out architecture and graphic design because they seemed to have creative jobs that would pay the bills. But, I kept having this nagging compulsion to make art and I finally realized that to be my true self I had to create these things, these objects that possibly had no value to anyone but me. At first I still did my day job and worked on my art in the evenings and week ends.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s funny, I’ve had people say things to me like: “Wow, its so cool how all of these doors have just opened up for your art career!” or, “Look what you’ve manifested”. It hasn’t been a smooth road. There were years of making art and experimenting when I didn’t know if the work would be appreciated or lead anywhere. Along with plenty of rejections from art exhibitions and galleries. Overall the biggest struggle has been finding a way to pay the bills while finding myself as an artist. This is nothing new and I think most creative people commiserate,
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make sculptural art with metal mesh or screen inspired by childhood summers with my grandmother – going in and out of her screen door. I come from family with a history of art making in the folk art tradition and consider my work Neo-Folk Art.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My daily routine includes a bit of journaling to pour out ideas and anxiety. I also watch one episode from, The School of Life series on Youtube along with history documentaries about art, travel, design and architecture.
