Starting out in my 20s, I owned a couple of liquor stores. It was cool and all, but I quickly saw that making money wasn’t everything. I hit the streets, knocking on doors, shaking hands, and showing my face. Letting people know who I am and what I’m about was crucial. You can’t expect someone to invest in you if you aren’t willing to meet them face-to-face.

But here’s the kicker—this space is crowded. Everyone’s trying to sell you something, and convincing folks that they should pay for our services was tough. That’s when I kicked off Authentic Impact. We decided to offer our services at a massive discount to local small businesses. Why? Because small businesses are the backbone of this country, and they deserve a fair shot at competing with the big dogs.

What we started with was building apps and mobile applications. But the real game changer? SEO and marketing. People need to be seen, and that’s where we shine. We’ve become specialists, helping businesses get the attention they deserve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest early challenges was the financial sacrifice required to get my business off the ground. In the first year, I didn’t pay myself at all. Instead, I reinvested everything back into the business and continued to work multiple jobs just to keep things moving. This really hammered home the idea that you’ve got to feed the business before it can start feeding you.

Despite the financial strains, I never doubted my path. There was never a moment when I thought about giving up. Even if it meant not making a dime for years, I knew this was what I was meant to do. The opportunity to positively impact people’s lives in various ways is what really drives me. I believe that making enough to live while maximizing your positive impact on the world is the most fulfilling way to operate. And eventually, this approach does pay off—it might just take a while.

During these tough times, my role within my company shifted significantly. I focused less on coding and more on selling our services and managing projects. I made sure to pay my developers and took on additional jobs myself to keep the revenue flowing. By being both the lead developer and the lead salesperson, I managed to keep our operations running without compromising on the quality of our work or our commitment to our clients.

It’s this kind of adaptability and resilience that has been crucial in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
