Today we’d like to introduce you to Amo Zhou.
Hi Amo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my artistic career in early childhood, I feel that during the journey I tried different materials, but the subject I included in my work is mostly the same. I like to work with subjects about mental health issues and environmental awareness. During the pandemic, I started working majorly with ink and charcoal as a way of expressing my depression during that time, and most of my work since then has been in black and white, though I’m still exploring other possible mediums such as printmaking.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the struggles I found was trying to find a balance between life and art. As a freelancer, I have to constantly be present to promote myself on social media, and sometimes it makes me feel I could never take a break from it. Another thing is the subject and mediums of my works. As an artist I am always looking for something new to work on, I like trying different mediums and getting new inspiration, so I have to constantly be learning something new about the world and about the people. I feel like I can’t have a break because once I stopped I wouldn’t be an artist anymore.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Graduated with an illustration major, and I love telling stories using my works. I love making drawings of animal characters and fantasy creatures with human emotions, and in my head, I will make up a story for each of them. I also apply this in my tattoo career, and my clients would tell me that they see themselves in these characters.
What does success mean to you?
I think success for an artist is when your work speaks from your heart, that you make the art work because you feel the urge to make it, not because you want other people to like it. I always think that art has the power to educate and influence. Success to me is that because your art is so genuine that someone sees your art can truly understand what you mean, and they share your emotion when you were making the piece.
