Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Pachence.
Hi Lisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was raised by two highly intelligent, loving and accomplished parents. My mother was one of the first women to graduate from Colombia Medical School, and my dad was a biopharmaceutical consultant with a PhD in biophysics from Penn. I depended on my intellect and hard work from a young age, and played high level soccer through college. Perfection, achievement, and intelligence were what I thought my most valuable tools.
I entered recruiting and HR paths, and eventually was running a recruiting department for a Fortune 100 company when I realized that something was seriously missing: a sense of purpose. I was “falling up the stairs” of success, and kept bumping my shins on the next level up. When working harder and learning more couldn’t solve the problem in front of me, I felt worthless. And I was directionless. I discovered the hard way that perfectionism was a way to drive achievement, but also to perpetuate shame and unworthiness. It led to success but with side dishes of unsatisfied and a whole lot of suffering.
At that point, I hired a life and leadership coach to support me in “learning” more about how to be a better leader. In one conversation, I was able to do what a decade of therapy couldn’t. I was able to see my blindspots and take responsibility for them.
I took a coach training program, leaped into Entrepreneurship, and here I am 10 years later. I support Underfulfilled, Overachievers, like my former self, to accomplish something other than career success – soul success. I help to discover and uncover one’s inner compass, and develop roadmaps to accomplish something as vague as “leaving a legacy”. And because I’m such a strong proponent for the coaching industry, I also mentor coaches who are seeking credentialing and crave coaching mastery – creating deeper impact for their clients and bigger income as a result.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been bumpy AF!!!
First, I was a very tough client. I clung to my victimhood and tools of working hard, burning out, and pushing myself to “do better”. I reserved the right to feel like life was unfair. But… I realized eventually that nobody was going to right the wrongs of what wasn’t taught to me, or what was done. I had to do that myself, and it was a great gift.
Second, entrepreneurship is one of the hardest personal development journeys you will ever be on (only second to parenting). You have to be business savvy, sales savvy, and support system savvy. You also have to have an emotional resilience that isn’t taught. Most businesses don’t make it past 5 years. But 82% of coaches close their business permanently after 2 years!! It’s a brutally competitive and saturated market. But there’s also room for highly trained, talented, and generous coaches if you’re willing to build with longevity.
Third, coaching is becoming an oversaturated industry, with untrained people calling themselves “coaches” when they’re actually consultants or mentors. This dilutes the power of the industry unfortunately, and it’s a challenge to rise above it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
LP Coaching is an Executive Life Coaching solution for Underfulfilled Overachievers. I’m a Master Certified Coach and a Coach for Coaches – women with big hearts seeking to make a big difference without big burnout. I was lucky enough to be accidentally successful early on in my business. But that’s not the case for most – 82% of trained coaches close their doors permanently after 2 years, and the average coach makes $34,000/year. That’s criminal. In a time of massive change, emotional resiliency and a support system has never been more important. I help Coaches and leaders to navigate this intense change, grow their craft, and bring sexy back into people’s careers and lives.
What sets me apart is that I was lucky enough to get into this industry 10 years ago, before “coaching became cool”. I’m one of the youngest Master Certified Coaches out there and continue to stand tall for the industry to be licensed and professionalized. I run an MCC mentoring group for women coaches called IGNITE Mastery… where anyone who is a coach can learn the skills and art of masterful coaching no matter where you are in your journey. Mastery is a mindset, and mindset comes before skillset.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was nerdy, athletic, creative, and wonderfully open to the world. I played high level soccer at a young age, and have always loved to read. It was my escape.
