Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Wint
Hi Jenn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been a solopreneur for over 10 years. My career in PR began on the corproate side in real estate, development and architecture before it evolved to contracting and supporting small and medium sized businesses across a variety of industries including women’s health, beauty and cultural events.
My main roles are as a Public Relations Specialist and a writer. I’m equally passionate about both sides of my business which I’m very grateful for. In the PR side of my business I work with small brands and businesses to create a strategy for their earned media and then coaching them in bringing it to life. Many small businesses and solopreneurs don’t have the budget for full PR services so working with them to teach them how to DIY their media outreach allows them to tell their story and connect with audiences they might not otherwise have access to.
The further I get into my PR career the more I want to support small to medium independant brands and businesses. They’re so passionate and their stories are so insightful. I am working on a balance in my business that allows me to be accessible for these smaller budgets while still offering top quality value to all of my clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ha! The road is never smooth. Being your own boss means wearing many hats and learning a lot of new skills along the way. Add two babies and a pandemic and there has definitley been some unexpected twists and turns.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I say both. Maximize your strengths and they’ll get stronger but always continue learning and growing. It’s important to flex the muscles, whether creatively, physically, financially or otherwise that you don’t always use. I also believe in surrounding yourself with people that are strong where you aren’t and working with partners and service providers who offer experience that compliments your own. You’re never going to be really good at everything so find others who are strong in the areas you’d like to improve or in areas you have no interest in! As a solopreneur having a team of other experts that support my clients and campaigns make work a lot more fun too.
As you know, we’re big fans of WINT Communications. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I work with small businesses to support them to pursue public relations and earned coverage. In addition to connecting brands with media, I love connecting businesses with other brands that they can algin with and connecting people with others that can support them.
One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Self-confidence is an ebbing and flowing balance. It can change daily. Surrounding myself with people who believe in me and show interest and curiosity in my work has been vital. Hanging around with other entrepreneurs, especially female entrepreneurs and working through challenges together while supporting one another is a great way to cut the loneliness of entrepreneurship and to build confidence and support in what you’re working towards. I’ve always been a naturally confident and optimistic person and although I’ve failed many times, I’ve always managed to learn from it and get back up and keep going. Being willing to fail is an important way to learn that you’re stronger with each mistake. I feel confident knowing I’ve fallen down before and managed to recover. Finding lessons and humor in mistakes makes trying again less scary.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
PR is ever evolving as the media landscape changes. I think we’re going to see more and more smaller media outlets and I hope we’ll see a shift back to local media. With the rise of AI, readers, viewers, consumers and clients want authentic stories. Humans want to buy from and work with other humans they like, respect and align with.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Networking and interpersonal skills. People work with people they enjoy communicating with. Often, they prefer to work with people they connect with on more than a surface level.
2. Transparent communication. Clear communication around expectations, deadlines, pricing and deliverables at the beginning of any project will make the execution so much smoother. Sometimes in business there are uncomfortable conversations but being clear and transparent about what you do, how you do it and what you need to get it done will save time and energy throughout any project.
3. Rest. I’m not the best at practicing this one but I know how much better I feel when I do. It’s easy to get sucked into progress and getting ahead but true success comes with balance and taking time to not only recharge but to rest and play. Time away from the hustle is where creativity thrives.
