Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellaf Al-tamimi

Hi Ellaf, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

My name is Ellaf Al-Tamimi. My journey began when my family and I fled southern Iraq during the 1991 war between Iraq and Kuwait. We lived in refugee camps in Saudi Arabia for about two years before coming to America. I grew up in Dearborn, Michigan until I was 14 years old. At that age, I was sent to Iraq as a child bride and forced into a marriage with a physically abusive partner.

In 2017, I managed to escape that situation by bringing my ex-husband to America on a spousal visa as the conflict with ISIS intensified. He stayed in the U.S. for about six months before returning to Iraq because he refused to live in a country that prohibited domestic abuse.

Left alone at age 27, without support, a college degree, or money, I worked full-time at a hospital every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night for four years while pursuing my undergraduate degree. I earned associate degrees in Political Science, Liberal Arts, and Criminology from Central New Mexico Community College before transferring to the University of New Mexico, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Criminology and International Studies.

My healing journey led me to become more spiritual, focusing on reprogramming my mind from the negative thoughts and behaviors ingrained in me through my experiences, especially as a single mother and domestic violence survivor. My main focuses have been finding my purpose, inner peace, gratitude, and mindfulness.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Some struggles I faced on my healing journey include:

1. Isolation: I often felt lonely, especially when certain friends or family members didn’t understand or support me. This lack of understanding sometimes made it hard to stay motivated and positive.

2. Reliving Trauma: Revisiting past traumas was painful and occasionally re-triggered old wounds, making it difficult to move forward. However, I persevered and fought through these moments.

3. Balancing Healing with Daily Life: Integrating healing practices into my busy daily routine was challenging. Managing my business, taking care of my kids, and handling other responsibilities often left little time for self-care.
