Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Healy.
Hi Dylan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It’s been important to me to embrace a bunch of different roles in music, in art, and in education. Call it restlessness or the eternal pursuit of happiness, but my curiosities to create, connect and learn are literally never satiated.
I am a composer, performer, curator, and record producer. I’m also the frontperson of a band called Stadia, which is named after my formative Dungeons & Dragons character (don’t judge). I’m also a member of bands with my best friends, including Figurine, Carey, Changeling, Tinker, Dream Songs, and more. We make records and tour together.
Fresh out of undergrad, I started an independent record label called Funnybone Records, which is turning 8 years old soon. Having lived in Connecticut my entire life, I’ve always known this state is a special place with so many talented people, but not enough opportunities nor platforms to promote those talents. As a result, a really inspiring do-it-yourself mindset has been continuously fostered around the state, where collaboration clearly prevails over competition. My label’s mission is to participate in the elevation of artists by producing opportunities to create/perform/showcase, creating reasons to gather/commune, and by connecting creatives to the resources they need to flourish.
In response to the norm of the abhorrent model of streaming royalties, I started booking shows, festivals and concert series to create more direct sources of revenue for artists. I co-operated the venue Wherehouse, currently run a venue called The Lodge, and collaborate with a swath of venues to host different live series.
It’s been amazing seeing the Connecticut arts communities continue to elevate. I have infinite respect to the talented, hard-working folks around me who inspire my label & music.
Outside of music, I am an educator, rock climber & plant dad.
Drop me a line if you’d ever like to connect or collaborate!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Funnybone Records is an independent label I started in Hartford, Connecticut, back in 2017. Since then, I’ve been working with friends and collaborators to release music by an international roster of emerging artists. My focus is on supporting artists and helping them grow—whether that’s through connecting them with the resources they need, booking them shows, or providing a platform to premiere their work. The catalog is eclectic, leaning towards the experimental fringes of genre; it’s always music that I don’t hear being made anywhere else. These artists are unreal…
I’m also passionate about creating spaces for people to gather, whether it’s through intimate concerts, DJ nights, festivals, film screenings, you name it. Alongside the label, I run “Import Sky”, a community arts journal, as well as the Funnybone & Friends benefit compilation series to support a rotating selection of nonprofits focusing on community healing. You can check out our roster and projects on our site!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Honestly, I’ve found the difference between something happening and not happening is your own initiative to take a chance and reach out to someone. At the root of any opportunity is connection. Whether it’s finding a mentor or networking in general, you should always be noticing what/who resonates within you. If something captures your attention, pay attention to it, for it’s a message telling your mind where it is and what it needs.
