Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tammie Mccurry
Dr. Tammie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in the military, which is where I learned the discipline that entrepreneurs must have. I was in the military for six years and earned my associate’s degree in criminal justice, bachelor’s in social science, and later my master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and my Doctor of Ministry in Christian Counseling. I always knew I wanted to help people. I initially wanted to be a lawyer, but I decided that I didn’t want to be forced to represent people who weren’t innocent. I looked into counseling because I liked helping people talk through their problems. Around the same time, I was called into ministry, which laid the framework for me getting to where I am today.
I have worked in the mental health profession for more than two decades in the public and private sector and have authored several books focused on marriage and family dynamics. I am licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I am also certified by the National Christian Counseling Association as a Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor-Advanced. My business, Confidential Consultants, is a quality improvement firm designed to provide businesses and individuals with creative solutions for quality improvement. Outside of my professional work, I serve as the CEO and Founder of a Christian Sorority – Tau Rho Mu Christian Sorority, Incorporated – where we help women become the Proverbs 31 woman through education, empowerment, and mentorship. I am also the Senior Pastor of Unity Worship Center alongside my husband, Elder Michael McCurry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to getting to where I am today was not straight and narrow. My biggest struggle was passing my licensure exam to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I had to have the persistence and commitment to continue pursuing it until I accomplished it more than 20 years after my initial attempt. I also had personal and financial challenges with pursuing education and experience while taking care of my husband during his 17-year fight with Polycystic Kidney Disease before he received a kidney transplant.
Professionally, I had to learn the business side of entrepreneurship because it’s much more than having the knowledge and skill. I’m still learning something new about entrepreneurship and business every day as I experience it.
While the road hasn’t been easy, it was absolutely worth it. I believe that anything worth having is worth working for. I can tell clients I work with and coach not to give up because I didn’t give up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Confidential Consultants, LLC?
Confidential Consultants is a quality improvement firm designed to provide businesses and individuals with creative solutions for quality improvement. Our business services include employee and leadership training and development as well as strategic project management and organizational auditing for behavioral health programs. Our individual services include marriage and family therapy, pastoral counseling, executive leadership coaching, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). I am also available for speaking engagements.
On the business service side, we strive to help small businesses, corporations, churches, nonprofits, government agencies, educational institutions, and healthcare organizations improve their quality of service and productivity both internally for their employees and externally for their clients and stakeholders. On the individual service side, we strive to help individuals navigate the “ships” of life – Ownership (self), Relationship (marriage or partnership), Kinship (family), Leadership (professional development), Friendship (platonic dynamics), and Stewardship (Finances).
My purpose behind this business has always been to give people a consultant they could be confident in. My business started as a safe space for leaders, influencers, and those in senior positions to work on themselves, their marriages and family issues without being judged. I also saw that minority women, especially those in leadership positions, were the most impacted by trying to balance marriage, family, and business. I later expanded to include quality improvement for businesses, employees, and individuals.
What excites me the most about my business is the opportunity to show people, especially minority women, the benefit of seeking therapy and other personal and professional quality improvement, since these types of services are often stigmatized in black and brown communities. I see therapy as no different than maintenance on your car – it’s maintenance for yourself and your relationship.
As a Christian counselor, I also often see that faith is a big part of who we are in the black community, and I have the liberty to be me with my clients. Clients can relate to me and see themselves in me, so the ones who would have been least likely to come to therapy (because of stigmas or previous misconceptions about faith and mental health support) are coming now. I get to help a lot of women see they can have the life that they want but don’t have to be superwoman all of the time.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was playing pretend doctor. I was always the doctor and always taking care of people. Little did I know that was a full manifestation of what I was destined to be. I am now a Doctor of Ministry in Christian Counseling and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, so I have the opportunity to help people with their mental, emotional, and spiritual health. I can now see that what I played as a child, I’m living it out as an adult.
