I come from a middle-class family in India, where I always dreamed of working in a corporate environment—dressing in fancy suits, delivering presentations, and participating in conferences. This aspiration led me to pursue a career as a Software Engineer, where I spent over nine years in the IT industry, honing my technical skills and contributing to various projects.

Life took an interesting turn when I moved to the United States on a dependent visa. During this time, I dedicated myself to raising my children, while also taking the opportunity to learn new skills and earn certifications. I immersed myself in understanding new cultures and enjoyed the richness of family life.

Once I obtained my work visa, I began searching for IT job opportunities. However, I faced the challenge of balancing my professional ambitions with my responsibilities as a parent, particularly as my children needed support after school. This led me to seek a role that could better accommodate my family commitments, which is why I joined a high school as an Assistant Teacher. This experience not only allowed me to contribute to my community but also gave me a chance to be present for my kids.

Recently, we moved to a new home, and I took another bold step by starting my own business in Plainfield, specializing in customized gifts and products. This venture has allowed me to blend my creativity with my entrepreneurial spirit, all while maintaining a flexible schedule that suits my family’s needs.

Overall, my journey has been one of adaptation and growth, where I’ve embraced new opportunities while staying true to my family values.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

My journey has certainly had its share of struggles, each presenting unique challenges.

Initially, transitioning from a successful career in India to being a stay-at-home parent in a new country was daunting. I faced feelings of isolation, as I was navigating a different culture while being away from my professional network. This made it difficult to maintain a sense of identity and purpose.

A significant struggle was being separated from my entire family, who remained in India. This distance sometimes felt overwhelming, as I missed family events and the support system that I had always relied on. The emotional toll of being away from loved ones, especially during milestones and celebrations, added another layer of challenge to our adjustment in the U.S.

When I began looking for work after obtaining my visa, I encountered the challenge of finding roles in the same city while also accommodating my family responsibilities. I had to balance my aspirations with the practicalities of being present for my children as they were so little.

Additionally, starting my own business came with its own set of hurdles. There were uncertainties about market demand, managing finances, and building a customer base from scratch. I had to learn quickly about entrepreneurship, marketing, and customer service, all while juggling family obligations.

Throughout these struggles, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and seeking support from my community. Each challenge has ultimately contributed to my growth, both personally and professionally, helping me to develop a strong foundation for my future endeavors.
