Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Medalen
Hi Clara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I first started my schooling for chiropractic, I thought I would be treating both people and animals. That changed when my dog Nero suffered a concussion as a puppy. He was hit in the head with a tennis ball while playing fetch. To adjust a puppy, it only takes the same amount of pressure you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. The hit on the head was more than enough to misalign his skull bones. He was left with uneven pupils, anxiety and headaches. His eyes would not track together or respond to light in sync. After seeing him recover from that trauma over time and with the help of an animal chiropractor, I knew that I wanted to dedicate all my time and focus on the needs of animals. My goal was to provide a high level of care that rivaled what we see in human chiropractic. That is why we have various ways of measuring pain and progress in our animals. We never want to guess with a pet’s health, instead we use our tools to establish a baseline of health and to track their progress through care.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have been in practice for about 3 years. We started mobile and quickly grew to require our own office space. There have had many growing pains along the way. We are the first animal chiropractic clinic to use objective measures like our Tekscan gait analysis and WellVu thermal scanner. This means that we are constantly improving on our protocols and procedures as we grow and expand. Our main priority is to provide the best care possible to our current practice members and so sometimes we need to take a step back from accepting new patients in order to better improve the experience of our patients. Every pet is an individual and so most of our changes revolve around making it a comfortable experience for all personalities. Without the cooperation of the pet, there is no way to achieve healing and so we must be excellent at reading animal behavior. Some pets are scared, some are bossy, others are too excited, and sometimes somebody is just having a bad day. Whatever the case, it is up to us and our staff to be flexible and accommodating while still controlling the encounter and being a calming presence for the pet.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are known for our gentle and specific chiropractic care. Animals are much more neurologically sensitive than humans and so we should not hear any popping or cracking, the animal should never be twisted about, and we do not want them under sedation and unable to give permission. Instead, we find what works best for each pet and we explore every complaint presented. Many people come in saying things like “maybe I’m imagining it” or “this might sound crazy…”. Our answer is always the same. Nothing is too insignificant to explore, always trust your instincts, and at the end of the day, you know your pet best so we will never discount an owner’s observations or experiences. This attention to detail is what we want to maintain as the business grows and expands.
