Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Cubbage
Hi Chloe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi! I’m Chloe Cubbage, I run a farm animal sanctuary nonprofit, an interior design firm, I am a proud sourdough mom and an aspiring flower farmer. I got a significant medical diagnosis at 24 that potentially could shorten my expected lifespan dramatically and ever since then I feel like I’m approaching life and experiences with my arms wide open. Now, 7 years later, I’m doing my best to streamline my life and businesses to align with my mantra ” do sh”t that sets your soul on fire” (are we allowed to swear?) and I truly love what I’m doing almost every second of every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve always been a little nervous about a smooth road. I feel very strongly that if too many things are going well, you’re capable of so much more. Every single day I learn humbling lessons, but I would not be where I am today if I had waited to “learn everything” before I started anything. I can usually be found laughing at myself reminding myself that I’m Failing Forward. Nothing will always go as you planned, pivot if you can, and restart if you have to.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of neglected, abused, or displaced farm animals. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we are proud to be home to ~100 residents. We have horses, mini horses, a cow, llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep, rabbits, cats, dogs and birds. We are largely donation funded and we strive to collaborate with the community in meaningful ways – we are partnered with several local groups that work with youth in the community. Giving these animals a second chance at life is such an incredible honor, we are proud of our small corner of the world.
What matters most to you?
If one person thinks that I have left the world a more beautiful place, I will have succeeded. I grew up with an Elsie de Wolfe quote on my wall that said — ‘I am going to make everything around me beautiful – that will be my life.’ When I was younger, I assumed it would be through my design work, but now that I’m older I see that I can add beauty through every interaction. When we save at-risk animals, when we give people flowers “just because”, when we help people fall in love with their home through intentional design … the world becomes a more beautiful place.
