Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Bramley
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I would say the most pivotal moment was in one of my negotiation classes in my last semester of college. I just received a job to work at American Airlines in their Procurement department where my core role would be to lead business-to-business negotiations. I wanted to stand out to the hiring team so I decided to attempt to negotiate my job offer as an undergrad and then planned to turn it into my negotiation professor as my final project. The negotiation was very successful and they increased my base, sign-on bonus, and even gave me airline miles (which covered the flights for a 3-week trip to Ecuador before I started).
When I turned this into my professor she notified me that another student just received an offer with American Airlines. I then helped him successfully negotiate his offer but when we started at AA I found out that outside of us no one in our cohort negotiated their offers. I thought this was odd and as everyone started to change careers, they would come to me for help negotiating their new job offers. After doing that for about five years I decided to start The Salary Negotiator and offer my experience to everyone.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! The greatest career challenge I faced was if it was ok to leave your company and seek new opportunities. I remember being worried to leave American Airlines because I was comfortable, an expert in my department, and had close relationships throughout the company. Leaving for a new company was the unknown and seemed like a big risk. But when I left American and started at Amazon it felt amazing. Yes, I was nervous and had no idea what I was doing the first 6 months but it introduced me to many new skills and strategies that I would’ve never learned at American. The same remains true for when I left Amazon to run TThe Salary Negotiator® full-time. Being open to opportunities and trying new roles allows you to grow and seek more in your career.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Salary Negotiator® centers around providing career professionals with strategies and confidence to negotiate their compensation. We provide professional job offer and salary negotiation coaching and courses to help individuals navigate the negotiation process and earn higher compensation.
I’ve personally led hundreds of salary negotiations and negotiated over $142M in compensation packages so all of our strategies are based on what we’ve found to work.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
“Successful people do not turn down opportunities” – this is a quote I picked up somewhere along my career journey that I still live by. I’ve followed this by trying to be open to new opportunities whenever they cross my desk. This has been influential to me in my professional career as I would never turn down a request from recruiters to connect on opportunities they may have available. This led to the role at Amazon where I was happy again at American and was not in a rush to leave, but by entertaining this opportunity to connect I found that the role at Amazon was exactly what I wanted next in my career.
