Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Trent
Hi Anita , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I loved yoga as a child. One of my favorite things to do after a sports workout in high school was to go home and stretch or I would take the lead on stretching on the field. In college I would drop into a yoga class at our Parks & Rec department. They are still teaching and practicing yoga in the same space today and our community is so fortunate. After my fourth child turned 4 and was in all day Montessori, I went to a new yoga studio in town and after class I remember thinking I have to have yoga in my life. Went to a few studios at that time until a Baptiste style studio opened literally down the street in 2012 and that was it! It was a style I loved and it was a message I resonated with and when she closed (its really challenging to own a yoga studio) after 4 years I knew I had to open a studio and I needed to do it quickly to try an capture the excitement this studio had for this particular practice. I opened, along with my c0-founder and former business partner, Susie Schul. I have since bought Suise out and I and the soul owner of BMPY and am currently in the middle of moving locations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
one of my biggest struggles is being a mom and trying to get out to a yoga class. It takes a lot of commitment, both from me and from the other moms and dads who come to the studio. But it’s so special when a parent can make it to class! Another challenge is that yoga studios are not very profitable, especially in small towns. My city has 330,000 people, but each year I have to deal with an increase in my lease. The people struggles I can deal with. I don;t expect perfection from people. I don’t expect to like everyone and I don;t expect everyone to like me, but I do expect the truth. When I don’t get the truth its not going to work. Another funny thing about yoga teachers is people thing we know a lot about a lot of things, so I have to be able to say, “I don;t know” and this is a part of my teacher training, helping new teachers understand they also don’t know, and when you don’t know something say you don’t know for goodness sake!! Speak the truth, always!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We opened in April 2017. We were successful immediately and enjoyed full classes and full teacher training until March 1st 2020 when we shut down for covid. My studio made it for a few practical reasons (saved income & online and in-person classes, but other than that I worked to solve problems as they arose and lean into optimism and the work. We specialize in Baptiste Yoga and Baptiste methodology. That’s our anchor, but we have teachers who specialize in yin, restorative, pranayama breath work, yoga Nidra, and more! We are known for hot, fun, welcoming, inclusive yoga in a clean and bright space. What sets us apart from others is our love for yoga and teaching yoga! One must be passionate about teaching in my studio! That passion must spill over in our students (who are open to it). Regarding my brand, it’s my community. My community is my brand. I do have a consistent message and my brand “voice” is powerful, yet kind. I would like readers to know we offer a variety of classes and meditation opportunities. We have a nutritionist on the team who will meet up with BMPY clients virtually.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Do you know The Taoist Parable? I’m not too attached to things being good luck or bad luck. Things just are, and I move through it.
