Today we’d like to introduce you to Aevin Kumar
Hi Aevin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Young creative to small business owner onto beginning a career in interior design. Growing up I was always surrounded by creative individuals—from my dad designing our home to my mom enjoying her crafts and interior projects. I had a love for painting and drawing, my parents always encouraged me to take on fun, creative hobbies alongside my academic classes. I’ve always been drawn to creative mediums, and when I started Coffee Craze Company, it was not just about learning the world of business or sharing the fantastic blends I helped create—it was also another way for my creativity to flourish. Whether it was sketching my first logo, designing the coffee labels, or growing to love and appreciate videography, photography, and content creation, the journey has been a creative adventure. Over time, this led to a deep appreciation for design, especially interior design. I knew in highschool I wanted to head into a career in interior design. Now, two years into my Bachelor’s of Interior Design program, I’ve found a passion for interior environments and making a positive impact on people’s daily lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
All business owners out there can relate to the struggles of starting a business. There have been many times when I felt like quitting, moments when business seemed slow, and when I felt overwhelmed. Juggling full-time classes with all the responsibilities that come with running a business is very challenging. I’m constantly trying to find new ways to manage my time more effectively. I started my business in high school, and now I’m over halfway through my bachelor’s program. I’ve found a good balance between school and my business, ensuring that I’m doing my best in both of the things I love. It may not be the conventional way to operate a business, but it works for me, and every business and owner is different.
When I started my business, many people didn’t take my startup seriously. They thought that a teenager starting a coffee business was unconventional, and they were right. But they were wrong in assuming that just because I was a teen, I couldn’t run a business or do anything beyond finishing my homework. I had no prior experience running a business, aside from a few business courses I had taken. Entering the coffee industry at such a young age was terrifying. There were countless moments of self-doubt, especially since I wasn’t physically making the products myself. I feared what others would think, especially being in high school, and I worried that everything might end up being a huge flop. I also faced skepticism from those close to me, doubting whether I could actually do it. There were laughs and taunts about a “child starting a coffee business,” and growing up feeling different from other kids made me question many of my decisions.
I had a vision, and with the support of a few family members and friends, I started my journey back in 2021. I never imagined that Coffee Craze Co. would continue to grow as it has. Through resilience and hard work, I’ve been able to expand my business and equally focus on my classes and building a future career in design.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Aevin Kumar, and I am the owner of Coffee Craze Company, based in British Columbia, Canada. I started my small business in 2021 while I was still in high school. My passion for coffee and interest in business drove me to create Coffee Craze Company. Although I was nervous and scared, I took the risk, and it paid off. The most valuable way for me to learn has been through hands-on experience, taking risks, and trying new things
I discovered my current coffee roaster, pitched my idea, and worked with them to develop my own blends, creating a classic collection. At the start of the business, I launched two coffee products, and now I offer a complete collection of classic roasts and grinds. Our coffee is ethically and organically sourced and freshly roasted by local roasters in collaboration with family farms and estate farms in major coffee-growing regions worldwide. For me, coffee isn’t just a drink—it’s a way of life. I wanted to create a space where coffee lovers can fully embrace their caffeine craze. I believe coffee can be a great way to kickstart anyone’s day, providing a boost of energy or helping them focus. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without the help of our roasters, with whom I’ve developed a small collection of blends ranging from Dark Roasts to Decafs and everything in between, along with offering options for your preferred grinds.
In the summer of 2024, I collaborated with two local business owners to create a glassware collection and a candle collection. My products are now sold across Canada, and I’ve built an incredible coffee community.
What I’m best known for is sharing coffee recipes on our Instagram page, which my audience loves. I try to share a couple of recipes each month and am always experimenting with our products to see what I can create. What I’m most proud of is not only the growth of my business but also what I’ve been able to achieve at such a young age. The best moments are when I’m recognized as the owner of my company and receive kind messages from people who love my products and brand.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People are often surprised to hear that I started a business at 16. Many also assume that, with running a small business, I must be pursuing a business degree or some form of higher education related to business. That’s when I love to share that I’m actually working towards becoming an interior designer, as I’m currently in a Bachelor of Interior Design program. While I’m proud of what I’ve built with Coffee Craze Company, even before starting the business, I knew I wanted to pursue interior design. My goal is to not only create beauty, it’s about human-centered design, focusing on improving people’s daily lives through thoughtful and functional environments.
