Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Steinbach.
Hi Vincent, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For most of my life, I’ve always been a creative person, whether it’s drawing, creating worlds and characters through writing or LEGOs, playing piano/keyboard, or even occasionally delving into the realm of poetry. Although it was something I struggled with and eventually overcame through the generous support of friends and family, autism has been something that has also helped me in reaching my creative potential. Creativity has helped get through hardships and much like autism, has inspired me to stand out and embrace being different. It has led me to take interest in stories that are unique in a way that they really stand out to where you can’t really pinpoint as to what it is. It’s given me an appreciation for things that are overlooked by most people.
In terms of how I got into writing my ongoing sci-fi dystopian novel, it began in the fall of 2015 in my junior year of high school, when we read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury in English class. The idea of a dystopian society and how some of those themes parallel in our society, is what inspired me to write the story. Firefighters who burn books and start fires, the idea in itself was very intriguing.
So I thought to myself “what’s something that hasn’t quite been done yet (well, to a certain degree)?”
And I had the idea of this law, but wasn’t sure what it would be. “Order…” was the first part. Looking through the years of these dystopian stories, one of them was George Orwell’s 1984, which was published in 1949. Taking the year of the book’s publishing, I thought “Order 949!” As for the reason for this order, I thought on world issues, and one of them, being overpopulation.
As for the general idea of the story, it’s about a law where people are taken and turned into organ-powered robots, called Biobots, who build upon the plans for the New World Enforcement Department (NWED). 32 years before the main story, there was a conflict between the NWED and the humanitarian-philanthropy group-turned rebellion, the Odpadlìk. As a result, the NWED won and the Odpadlìk were essentially defunct. Fast forward 32 years, and this is where the main story begins. Lars Klein learns of this history and finds out the de facto ruler of the NWED, Jake Moore, is after Lars so he can turned into the Biobot leader, Cerebus V, who will control a new series of Biobots. These ones will be created to destroy the remnants of humanity. Learning of all of this, he heads off into the Wasteland to find what’s left of the Odpadlìk and put an end to Order 949, the NWED, the Biobots, and Jake’s tyranny.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s certainly been some bumps over the years, and there’s hurdles I’ve overcame, and there’s some I still face now, such as reworking the draft over and over and figuring out what fits/works best from a plot and practical perspective, to writing fight scenes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
By trade, I am a welder, and though it’s not fully relative to my art and writing, there are things in the field that give me ideas and inspiration, such as various equipment and how their designs can be implemented into my word as a weapon or even a vehicle.
I think something that sets me apart from other is the little details I put on my creations, whether it be shapes or designs being made to resemble a face, how the drawings of some of the creatures are accompanied with a baby of that creature, or how the wrinkles on a face give an idea of the attitude of a character. As a lot of people say, it’s always the little things that make it count.
I think I also get really into the lore/worldbuilding and I feel as though I give these characters a story, a reason they’re put in that world space. From the clothes they wear to the weapons they carry, I always make sure they’re a proper fit and feel like they belong in the world that is Order 949. And I think these traits give these characters a lot of depth, that of which is something I’m proud of and wish to continue.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I think a way people can work/collaborate with me is to brainstorm ideas for things that might fit in the world of Order 949, or even plot ideas for certain characters. Or better yet, create new things for the worldspace, such as new characters, creatures, weapons, or factions! It’s always so exciting to make said creation fit with the exchanging of ideas! Plus, it gives me ideas for what things other people want to see!
As for support, the likes, shares, and comments go a long way. They are the driving force that inspire to continue this endeavor and am always very grateful for the support I’ve garnered over the years.
