Today we’d like to introduce you to Trang Hoang.
Hi Trang, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my journey as an art student at Seattle Central College in 2019, where I first experimented with oil painting. I instantly fell in love with this medium and decided to make it a tool to focus of my work. After moving to New York to study illustration, I immersed myself in various forms of art through galleries, museums, and interactions with others on similar paths. Stepping out of my comfort zone, as I do now, was something I never thought I could achieve before. However, having faith in myself and continuously creating more art, training, and learning has significantly boosted my self-belief.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s important to address the self-doubt that everyone experiences—it’s often our greatest enemy. Even renowned individuals like Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most celebrated painters, struggled with self-doubt. However, I genuinely believe that life’s journey involves convincing yourself of your own worth, and one effective way to do this is by creating more and more art. A creating is the act of hope, the more hopeful you are the less self doubt you carry on your shoulder.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would say I am just as normal as the other art students living in the world. Focusing mainly on oil painting and digital art, I wanted to create illustration as well as creating contemporary art pieces. I believe that there is no one way in art, you can do whatever you want as long as you felt joy and fulfilment in creating. The act of creating is hope, the more you do it, the more you look at the world with more hope. My art though focuses on issues revolving around society, human relation and philosophy in life, it somehow sparks joy in myself whenever I can create something. It serves a purpose of bringoing my view of life onto the world and motivates me to be educated on different perspectives of people.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During the Covid-19 crisis, being confined and quarantined meant I couldn’t see my friends or go out, which gave me a chance to think and reflect on various values, especially about myself. Although missing the opportunity to visit galleries felt like a loss, I found other ways to stay engaged and avoid boredom by doing and making art. This time not only allowed me to concentrate on my painting as I prepared to apply to university, but it also helped me gain deeper insights into my artistic journey and personal growth. So it is true to me that there are always brighter side of every circumstances, all depends on our decision and how we view it.
