Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Goldman
Hi Susan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In March of 2020 (height of Covid) I was furloughed from my job that I had in the fashion industry and I was at home with my husband and then 5 year old daughter. My daughter and I did crafts everyday together. She would pick a theme for the day and I would pick activities to do with that theme in mind.
One day she chose crayons as the theme so we read the book “The Day The Crayons Quit” book and I looked on Pinterest on how to make crayons. We made crayons together and we wrapped them in tin foil (we didn’t have wrapping paper) after they had cooled so she could give them to her friends when she saw them in the park. Her friends loved the crayons.
Not knowing what would be happening with my job I started to think of what would be next in my career.
One day at 2:00 in the morning I woke up from a dream and thought ” I can make crayons”. I immediately took a piece of paper next to my bed wrote down some ideas and sketched my logo.
The next morning I woke up and told my husband and daughter my idea and they were both supportive. I did a lot of research and development over the next couple of months with my daughter who chose colors, helped to pop crayons out of the molds and chose different themed boxes to make.
We soft launched our business locally in our town of Hoboken (we have since moved because we needed more space for our business) and by word of mouth it began to grow. People recommended it to their friends and then their friend’s who did not live locally started to ask for our crayons.
We launched our website in September of that year and our Etsy shop in November so we could ship across the country. In 2022 we started to sell to retailers and the dream keeps going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a business is never easy. I wear all of the hats- social media, shipping, product developer etc so it is hard to find the time to do it all. My now 9 year old daughter is the Cre8ive Director and she helps to pop crayons out of the mold, helps with creating new boxes and also with social media BUT she also wants to be a child and have fun.
So I would say finding the time to do it all is my biggest struggle
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We make personalized crayons. Our rainbow colored crayons are the most popular with each letter or shape being a different color of the rainbow.
We shave the wax buildup and polish each crayon before we pack them. There are lots of crayon companies that keep the wax on so that it makes it difficult to color with them right away.
I am most proud that I pitched the TODAY show and our heart shaped crayons were recently featured in a Valentine’s day gift segment.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always open and welcoming to new opportunities. They just need to reach out and we can see how we can work together.
