Today we’d like to introduce you to Stells Di Rossi Hurst.
Hi Stells , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since childhood, I have been blessed with a natural inclination towards creative expression. I have always been fascinated by expressing myself creatively, engaging in activities such as dancing, crafting, and tinkering with art and musical instruments. This creative expression has been my way of metaphorically connecting with the world that I haven’t always felt apart of for several reasons and societal inequalities.
For me, creativity is an innate and almost instinctual trait- I am a creative innovator by design, just something I was born with. I often felt misunderstood by others because of it and grew up with a limited perspective and understanding that it was more than a past time but a part of who and what I am. I am an artist of many degrees all at once. Where words failed, my creativity emerged as a means of balancing the unspoken and acknowledging my emotions. It became my channel for expressing myself to the world.
As I matured, I realized that creativity was not solely driven by seeking attention, escaping reality, or pursuing a hobby. Instead, it developed into a transformative coping skill. Initially, it served as an escape from my challenges and emotions, but as I evolved, it became an integral part of my identity, encompassing all aspects of who I am and my perspective on life.
It transcended my personal experiences and became a reflection of both my inner world and the broader world around me. As I continue to grow and evolve, my creativity continues to shape my narrative and soundtrack to life, offering diverse perspectives and insights.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many creatives, social stigma, race, culture, and gender have posed significant challenges. The adage “You cannot please everyone all of the time” encapsulates human nature’s inherent tendency to oppose and discredit. Society’s bias towards stigma impedes progress and expression. It is unrealistic to expect universal approval, particularly when one’s creations evoke discomfort or challenge societal norms.
Being a creator is a noble endeavor, yet society often overlooks this fact due to preconceived notions. Traditionalists may harbor reservations towards abstract art or innovators who challenge boundaries, forgetting that those they admire were once rebels themselves.
I have personally encountered daily racial tension, gender bias, colorism, sexism, and racial stigma. These experiences can serve as catalysts for personal growth or cause emotional distress. Creatives often explore vulnerabilities in their art when criticized by those lacking the same perspective. This can be particularly challenging for individuals with a creative spirit. Even when dismissing insults and doubts, they can evoke emotional pain.
Developing the ability to transcend these feelings and remain authentic to oneself and one’s art is an ongoing journey. Not everyone can achieve this equilibrium. It requires the capacity to create for oneself and those who resonate with one’s message. Ultimately, the opinions of others hold no sway despite the hurtful nature and intent. At some point, one realizes their role as a creator is to initiate and stimulate conversations that question societal norms. This signifies the artist’s true impact with humanity.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a multifaceted artist and musician, I blend creative expression across diverse disciplines. As a musician, I am passionate about sound, composition, and performance, utilizing music as a powerful storytelling medium. My diverse work reflects a wide range of influences and deep connections to music production.
As an artist, I am recognized as a psychological expressionist painter, known for my raw emotional expression and intricate storytelling in visual works. My art is deeply personal, reflecting my life journey, struggles, and triumphs. I have exhibited my work in Southern Arizona and Latin America, with commissioned pieces reaching international audiences in Mexico, Guatemala, France, and Italy.
Beyond music and art, I am also involved in fashion design, modeling, decorum and body positivity advocacy, creating multifaceted creative works that combine storytelling across visual and audio mediums.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In today’s technologically advanced era, the creative landscape is constantly shapeshifting and transforming. The digital era has brought unprecedented innovation, elevating artists globally. However, this progress faces challenges from stagnant mentalities in the industry and society, hindering the emergence of new creatives.
In this rapidly evolving industry, creatives must navigate cultural and social factors while maintaining a global perspective. Staying informed about industry innovations and cultural shifts is crucial, as many artists fall into stagnation by failing to adapt.
Adopting a global approach opens opportunities for continuous learning and growth. Embracing a lifelong learning mindset is essential for success in this ever-changing industry. Continuous evolution and growth unlock one’s full potential.
As a student of life and currently attending college for my craft, I immerse myself in a dynamic learning environments both off and on campus with practical experience and cutting-edge technology. Emersion is the key, exploration is the process, evolution is the goal. So, I draw inspiration from everything and everyone, as the adage goes, “Art imitates life.” Striking a balance between tradition and innovation is essential for being an artist in today’s world.
