Today we’d like to introduce you to Shorn Marshall
Shorn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Music runs in the family. I started singing at the age of 3, writing songs at the age of 14, and picked up the guitar at the age of 18. Music saved me from a very bad place in my life as a teenager and I owe it my entire life for it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are some struggles during my journey to be honest. In 2017, I decided to pursue my music full-time. A lot of the concerns was coming from my family because I am a single mother of 2. Being a mother took a lot of my time to prevent me to work on my craft. Every time I have an opportunity, I always put my kids in my decisions about who would watch them. Now they’re old enough to take care of themselves, I’m putting in more time for my music and my other ventures to create my empire so I can pass this legacy to my children.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Besides being a singer/songwriter, I’ve been producing more and being a musician as a guitarist. Being able to learn other areas in the music industry gave me more knowledge and experience to produce more multiple streams.
What sets me apart from others is that even though I’m a Hip-hop/Soul artist, my songwriting and my voice doesn’t have a specific genre. I can be able to step out from my comfort zone and challenge myself to be a better artist learning different genres of music and be able to fuse it together.
I’m very proud of myself because every time I received an opportunity to perform, collaborate with other artists, getting interviews, and getting awards for my accomplishments, I always reflect from the very beginning when I started to pursue music full-time. From struggling to getting started to professional status makes me feel more humbled about how much work I have to put in to get to this point.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about my city is it helps me stay on my roots. Everywhere I go or move to another city, I still know where I come from. I take my city everywhere I go.
What I like least about it is that the music scene is huge but only a few people get those opportunities within the city. And it’s hard to gain a fanbase in your own town. They only recognize people based on follows, likes, and views. But the artists that don’t have that much following that don’t get that chance to shine be faded in the background those are the artists they should look for.
