Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Rincón
Hi Sergio, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began in Bucaramanga, a small city in Colombia, where opportunities in the film and TV industry were scarce, and specialized education in the field was non-existent. Despite these limitations, I was determined to pursue my passion for visual storytelling and digital art. I began my education by taking advantage of the resources available to me, studying Graphic Design, Advertising, and 3D Animation.
Realizing the need for greater opportunities, I moved to Bogotá to work with larger companies and more ambitious projects. This experience helped me solidify my foundation in animation, motion graphics, and compositing while giving me invaluable professional exposure.
I always dreamed of studying at one of the world’s best universities, but I knew financial barriers stood in the way. Over the years, I worked hard to enhance my skills and professional profile, which eventually allowed me to apply for scholarships. After several attempts, in 2018, I was awarded a scholarship from Colfuturo, which enabled me to pursue a Master’s degree in Animation and VFX at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Moving to the U.S. with my wife was a significant milestone, but it came with challenges. Adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life required resilience. To support ourselves, I worked as a dishwasher at the university’s restaurant while studying full-time. Despite the hurdles, I excelled in my program and even won the VFX Compositing category in the university’s spring awards.
After completing my Master’s degree, I started my journey in the international film industry. I worked as a Postvis Artist at The Third Floor, contributing to blockbuster films like Uncharted and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Later, I joined Perception in New York, where I worked on title sequences and user interface designs for projects like Hawkeye and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Most recently, I worked as a Motion Graphics Designer and VFX Compositor at DNEG, contributing to projects like The Witcher: Blood Origin, Spy Kids: Armageddon, and Oppenheimer.
Through every step of this journey, my passion for visual storytelling has been the driving force. It has helped me overcome challenges and continuously grow as an artist. Today, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited about the future projects that will allow me to keep pushing creative boundaries and inspiring others along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth, and every obstacle has been a defining moment in my journey. Growing up in Bucaramanga, Colombia, I dreamed of working in the film and TV industry, but opportunities in my hometown were scarce, and there were no specialized educational programs in this field. I started with what was available—studying graphic design, advertising, and 3D animation—and gradually built a foundation for my career.
The turning point came when I realized I needed to move to Bogotá, where the industry was more developed, offering access to larger projects and opportunities to grow. However, moving to a new city brought challenges—adapting to a new environment, competing in a bigger market, and continuously proving myself in a fast-paced industry.
One of the hardest parts of my journey was pursuing my dream of studying abroad. Financially, this seemed impossible, but I refused to give up. Over the years, I focused on gaining experience and refining my skills, which allowed me to apply for scholarships. After many failed attempts, in 2018, I was awarded a scholarship from Colfuturo, giving me the chance to study for my Master’s degree at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
While this was an incredible opportunity, moving to the U.S. came with its own set of challenges. My wife and I had to adjust to a new culture and language while navigating one of the most expensive cities in the world. Even with scholarship support, we needed additional income to stay afloat. I worked as a dishwasher at the university’s restaurant while attending full-time classes. Despite these struggles, I stayed focused and was honored to win an award in the VFX Compositing category at the university’s spring awards.
Graduating during the pandemic in May 2020 presented yet another challenge. The film industry had slowed down significantly, making job hunting an uphill battle. After months of uncertainty, I landed my first job in New York, marking the beginning of my career in the international VFX industry.
Although the journey has been full of challenges, each one has strengthened my determination and resilience. These experiences have shaped me both personally and professionally, teaching me that growth often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and persevering through adversity.
