Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Charles
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I found a love for music at a very young age. My dad was a radio DJ and took me to my first metal concert, And pretty much from that point forward, music was the only goal that I wanted to accomplish, rock and metal specifically. I listened to any record I could get my hands on through my dad mostly, he would burn me CDs or get them for me as gifts. Then I bought my own once I was old enough to work. I also would occasionally get to listen to stuff that bands and labels submitted to my father to play, this was the beginning of me finding new bands. Then during the rise of YouTube, They gave me access to unlimited sounds from all over the world. and then the roles kind of reversed where I was starting to show my dad music. And that’s still something we do to this day, we are always showing eachother new bands.
From there, I became a teenager, and then started working on becoming a musician myself in a more serious and goal oriented path. A lot of my friends growing up were guitar players with similar music taste to myself, and we would talk music and go to concerts as often as we can. It was a regular part of life, even though I grew up in smaller towns and got less shows throughout the year.
When I was a teenager, my dad became a concert promoter and would book shows on the side of being a Program Director for an Active Rock radio station. So that increased the amount of bands I was able to see, as well as began my journey into promoting my own shows, because I got to learn from my dad who went by Dan Woodz at the time and his partner, Quinn Tanzer. I appreciate their patience with me, I learned a lot.
Then at 19 I moved to Boise, Idaho and started getting involved with the local music scene there. I worked with bands, booked shows, and was just a general music fan, and eventually I tried to find musicians to jam with. I fronted a few bands, and eventually got to where I am now, where I am fronting Suturist and Dead At Dawn.
My business partner Will Pompey and I, who had been working with me on multiple projects for years after I moved to Boise, finally started a business instead of being just independent promoters known as DynaDuo Presents. We book shows actively in Boise with multiple venues, but a majority of our shows go through a local venue called the Knitting Factory. They have been nothing short of amazing for many years, both as a fan and a community partner working with them. it was one of the first places I truly felt at home when moving to Boise. I met a majority of my friends in that building, I met so many of my heroes in that building, I’ve played and booked so many shows in that building, it’s very much a part of me as a musician. And I can’t thank them enough for that.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not, but nothing is. My story isn’t unique from any other musician, I struggled finding like-minded people to work with, I struggled with financial issues for a good chunk of my adult life, I have struggled to get good opportunities playing on good shows, the list goes on.
But I wouldn’t have it any other way, because everything was an opportunity to learn. And it made me stronger and more resilient.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I front 2 metal bands in Boise, Suturist and Dead At Dawn. I also book shows for local and regional acts with my business partner Will Pompey under the name DynaDuo presents. One of the things that makes me proud doing those things is being able to be part of a community of like-minded people who just want to enjoy and appreciate art. I enjoy giving people the fruits of their labor as well as assistance in how they can better their shows in the future as well. I would say that’s something that also sets us apart from others, we streamline the process of basic promotion to help teach bands who may not know how to do it themselves. We want to point them in the right direction so that way we all succeeded and grow.
How do you define success?
A well thought out plan with a forward trajectory in life based upon what gives you fulfillment.
