Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Mizrachi
Hi Sara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi! My name is Sara Mizrachi and jewelry has been a part of my life for nearly my entire life. I started making jewelry around the age of 7 and I quickly fell in love with creating patterns of color, shape and texture(my mom still has a few pieces from that long ago). I should note that I am 38 years old…
Jewelry design became a larger part of my life at the age of 13, when my best friend came over and we chose jewelry making as our activity. We made necklaces using clay flower beads, and she had such a strong, positive reaction to my finished necklace that is sparked that all encompassing passion for jewelry. Since then, I have been growing and honing my skills, mostly through life experience, although lately I have been working with a business coach(Monica Little) who has really helped me refine my brand, leaning into my instincts and taking risks along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is never a smooth road, and honestly, you’ll only learn if you have to navigate around, over and through hard times. I’ve dealt with more than one recession, making mistakes and investing in opportunities without enough knowledge. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, which was not an easy market. There are so many artists there and you have to stand out. I definitely had to teach myself how to sell myself and my jewelry to customers and store. I had to be willing to change my mentality when it came to my design choices, to roll with changing trends and affordability.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design and make bold, colorful jewelry that is inspired by the colors, shapes and textures of nature. I love to create both geometric and whimsical designs using gemstones and brass(and silver and gold filled). I have been making flower hair pins using vintage German lucite from the 1950’s/60’s since 2006 and they have been a bestseller for the last 18 years!
I am very proud of all of my pieces that have been worn on TV and gifted to celebrities, but I am most proud of the evolution of my designs and my love of helping my customers style themselves. As a mom(of 3), I especially want to make things easier for busy parents to elevate their look and to feel bold, confident and joyful!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Beaded jewelry isn’t going anywhere and colorful stones are IT. People always look for classic pieces they can wear everyday and pieces that they can layer and mix and match. I love mismatched pieces that just work!
Pearls have come back into fashion, they are so glamorous but can also be modern and bold, which is a strong focus of mine.
I personally don’t revolve my designs around trends, but I certainly have found that my instincts took me in the right direction.
Affordable style definitely fits into today’s economy, but if you stand out and really have a clear message, customers are always ready to see your designs.
