Today we’d like to introduce you to Rozella Mahjhrin
Hi Rozella, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)—which focuses on promoting fair treatment, access, and opportunities for all individuals—began from a deeply personal place. Growing up with a birthmark on my face, I often felt the sting of being treated differently, which shaped my understanding of inclusion and acceptance. Those experiences fueled my passion for ensuring that no one else feels marginalized. Nine years ago, I founded True Complexion as a storytelling platform dedicated to celebrating diverse narratives and fostering self-acceptance.
Over the years, my mission has evolved into a multifaceted role as a DEI advocate, trainer, and consultant. In my training sessions, I cover a wide range of topics, including unconscious bias, privilege, systemic change, allyship, and the importance of inclusive language. I emphasize that DEI is not just about ticking a box for public image; it requires genuine commitment to aligning core values with everyday actions. True change occurs when organizations recognize that DEI is integral to their culture and practices.
Additionally, I consult with brands looking to create more inclusive marketing campaigns. I guide them in moving away from unattainable beauty standards and instead celebrating the real diversity within our communities. By showcasing authentic stories and experiences, brands can foster a deeper connection with their audiences.
This work is not just my profession; it is a personal mission to create a world where everyone feels valued and included. Each day, I strive to empower others and help build environments where diversity is celebrated, and all individuals are genuinely seen and heard.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has certainly not been smooth, but each challenge has contributed to my growth and understanding of the DEI landscape. When I started True Complexion in 2015, the concept of DEI wasn’t widely recognized. Much of my initial work involved educating people about it—explaining its significance and how it can create a more just society. As the landscape of DEI continues to evolve, staying informed and adapting my approach has been essential.
I’ve been fortunate to build strong relationships with clients and a supportive community. However, I’ve also encountered situations where organizations used DEI as a front for their public image, while behind the scenes, they perpetuated unfair treatment. This experience has made me more discerning about whom I choose to work with. I prioritize collaboration with individuals and organizations that are genuinely commit to DEI and are willing to implement real change rather than simply checking a box.
Navigating these complexities can be challenging, but they have reinforced my dedication to advocating for authentic inclusion and respect. Each struggle has deepened my resolve to create a more equitable world, where everyone is truly valued and treated with dignity.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in fostering DEI across a wide spectrum of sectors, ncluding brands, schools, event organizers, corporate entities, and government bodies. My work begins with a deep dive into each organization, assessing their current practices, culture, and the unique challenges they face. I believe that every organization has the potential to create inclusive environments, but this requires a tailored approach. I collaborate closely with clients to identify the specific areas that need attention, ensuring that our strategies resonate with their core values and mission.
At the heart of DEI is the understanding that it’s not merely about policies or ticking boxes—it’s about engaging in profound soul work. This involves aligning everyday actions with the organization’s values, fostering a culture of self-reflection, and encouraging individuals to confront their own biases and privileges. I emphasize that for DEI initiatives to be effective, there must be genuine buy-in from everyone involved. This means not only having the right structures in place but also nurturing an environment where individuals feel safe and empowered to express their authentic selves.
In addition to my DEI work, I offer specialized communications and public speaking courses, with a strong focus on empowering fellow advocates. I am passionate about helping individuals find their voices and share their stories, enabling them to become impactful agents of change within their communities. By equipping more people with the skills to engage in these vital conversations, we can collectively create a deeper understanding and acceptance of our differences.
What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and meaningful connection. I prioritize collaboration with those who are genuinely invested in making a difference, guiding them toward real, lasting change that resonates at every level of their organization and community.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor can significantly impact your journey. It’s essential to seek someone who not only understands your field but also genuinely cares about their community. A mentor with heart, who is invested in your growth, can challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and help you become a better version of yourself.
Networking is about building authentic connections rather than merely collecting contacts. Attend events and engage in conversations where you can share ideas and learn from others. Look for relationships where values align and mutual respect exists—not just financial interests or the allure of fame.
Trust your judgment when assessing people; some may appear genuine on the surface but lack sincerity. Surround yourself with those who share your passions and values, and be open to supporting others in their journeys. You might be surprised by where a simple chat can lead!
