Today we’d like to introduce you to Rory Alvarez
Hi Rory, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Rory alvarez and I’m a NYC based multidisciplinary artist.
I’ve always loved things that stimulate my senses ;fashion, food , animals, music landscapes ANIME !!
I have a family that was very supportive of my artistic thirst as a kid so it was very easy for me to realize that I wanted to create.
My grandpa used to make me draw a lot when he had to babysit me, so I guess I can say that’s where it started.
Then as a young teenager I fell in love with fashion. Makeup ,malls ,hello kitty and sailor moon.
My first encounter with fashion was at 17, styling for a friend that was in college for photography.
I didn’t even know that was a career till then and from that day I decided I was going to be in fashion/art.
Back in Santiago (Chile) there was not too many options or space for You to explore this artistry, so I became My own option and platform called “BADDEST” an independent production company that started on Instagram and embraced local Talents of all types, pushing visual and political boundaries in a city that was not used to this edgy image.
It was definitely a fun ride that taught me so much and allowed me to know so many amazing artists and who I was.
Baddest was not only a platform
For other featured talents but a way to have a credible portfolio as a creative director & producer.
This gave me so many opportunities with other creatives, one of them
My first payed gig as a creative director in New York for an artist under an independent recording label.
This was a pivoting point in my life, an eye opener that gave independence to my passion that Now was becoming my CAREER.
When I moved to New York things had a little plot twist and I fell in love with makeup, and became a pro makeup artist Adding another skill to my bag of Tricks.
This city has so many opportunities waiting for you that it became the perfect playground for my hunger to create!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the main challenges I face as a gay latino in the art world in New York is the competition. New York is a city full of talented and passionate people who share the same dream of succeeding in art. This competition can be stimulating, but also poses an obstacle , making difficult to stand out.
Moreover, in such a visual and media-driven industry, it’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly comparing oneself to others. In the age of social media, where other people’s content is just a click away, it’s a challenge not to be overly influenced by what others are doing. I’ve learned that it’s crucial to stay true to my vision and my style, resisting the pressure to conform to external expectations. This requires strong self-confidence and a clear understanding of my identity and values.
At the same time, being part of the LGBTQ+ community and being Latino gives me a unique perspective that I consider a strength. Although there are challenges, there is also a great opportunity to bring diversity and authenticity to the industry. My goal is to use my experiences and my voice to CREATE ART that is not only innovative but also represents and celebrates diversity
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
From art direction , styling, makeup, hair, consulting or producing from the ground up I’ll provide you a service customized to your own expectations and likings.
My work in the world of art, specifically in fashion styling, is centered on a highly personalized and collaborative approach with each client. My signature style involves working one-on-one with each person, dedicating time and attention to deeply understand their dreams and aspirations. This process goes beyond simply selecting a concept; it’s about creating a transformative experience that reflects my clients’ fantasy worlds.
From our first meeting, I strive to capture the essence of what the client envisions, whether it’s a style inspired by past eras, a futuristic aesthetic, or a blend of elements that resonate with their personal identity. I work meticulously to translate these visions into real and tangible looks, paying attention to every detail to ensure that each garment and accessory aligns with their dreamed narrative.
Throughout the process, I maintain constant communication, adjusting and perfecting every aspect of the styling until we achieve a perfect harmony between the client’s vision and reality. This includes not only selecting clothing and accessories but also considering hairstyles, makeup, and any other elements necessary to create a cohesive and dazzling presentation.
Aligning with brands such as Disney, Canon, Samsung, chunks, squigs beauty, various artist like Maneskin, Mel4ever, Chichi and multiples magazines.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
In my work as an artist, I’ve learned that crises, whether personal, professional, or global, can challenge our skill and creativity in unexpected ways. However, I’ve also discovered that these situations can be unique opportunities for growth and reinvention.
My identity as a queer latino in the art world has taught me that diverse perspectives are a powerful source of resilience
and creativity. In times of crisis, leveraging the richness of different experiences and viewpoint can offer innovative solutions and strengthen that sense of community.
