Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Pickett
Hi Richard, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got into yoyoing around 2004 and making hiphop music around 2014. For yoyoing, I got into it because of bullying and it becomng a creative outlet for my worries and problems at the time. I got into music because of my sister making poerty. I started getting into writing poetry and just followed her lead.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was more of a “developing” road you can say. There have been times where Im so ingrained into building my skills as a yo-yo player and music artist that I isolated myself from the world around me. Friends, family, and relationships suffered for a long time. I didnt see any of them as important than building myself as an artist. One time, I performed almost 20 times in one month. I skipped family time, dates, and hangouts that entire month. When I actually did have the time, my parents worried about me and thought I was on drugs. I would come home really late or on rare occasions not at all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im mainly known as a yo-yo player but I combined it with my love of hiphop music. I usually have a set that showcases my yo-yo tricks and transitions into my music. Im proud that I have built a great following of people that recognize me form around the world for what I do. Everyone always says theres nobody like me out here that uses a toy and is super good at it and then spits some of the most fire bars imaginable.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
It would have to being the greatest multiplication user in 3rd grade. I was the only person in my class that can do times tables in their head. My mom bought a times tables poster that was behid my closet and I studied it every day before I went to school and was home.
