Today we’d like to introduce you to Reginald Waller Jr.
Hi Reginald , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey sketching on any extra paper I had. Corners of tests, on the back of worksheets. Anywhere. But I never really took it serious until my senior year of high school when I was injured and couldn’t play football and had to face the fact I wasn’t really good enough to play at the college level anyways. I fell back to my first love; Art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a very bumpy road, but obstacles eventually become stepping stones. I only say it’s been bumpy because whenever you’re alchemizing a passion or hobby into something that makes money and pays the bills, it’s tricky. There have been numerous times I felt like I was only working to eat, or working to draw. But now I’m very thankful to say I see what it was all teaching me. Patience, resilience, hustle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a graphic artist and creator of a comic series titled Ramen Shaman®. Yup, that’s a trademark sign. I’ve copyrighted and trademarked it. That what I’m most proud of. When you can definitively say “that is mine. I own it.” It’s a great feeling. I’m surrounded by some AMAZING art peers who have their own respective stories and characters, and what sets me apart is how I can appreciate what they have while still remaining focused and intent on my work that I’ve done and what I still have to do.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the tradition of greatness. I’m from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Home of the Crimson Tide. The city is known for the champions and “winning tradition.” Even though I’m not an Alabama fan, I love being around people who are so focused on the Win. I also think the people in my city are very hard workers and have a hunger for greatness.
The thing I like least about my city would have to be that some of the regular blue collar people get overlooked at times because of the big momentous things happening revolving around the university. However, when I think about it, I guess that’s part of the package.
