Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Boumstein
Rebecca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! I am a 2-time teenage cancer survivor. When I relapsed at age 19, I had to have a hysterectomy. So from the age of 19, I always knew surrogacy would be the only way to have a child of my own.
In 2018, our only embryo was transferred to our surrogate and stuck on the first shot. We had a perfect journey from start to finish and now have a five-year-old son. We started our journey to give him a sibling in 2020. It has been a bumpy and expensive road since. We found a great surrogate who unfortunately miscarried at the beginning of 2022. Unfortunately, she was unable to proceed again. We got extremely lucky that another surrogate basically fell into our lap. We did 3 transfers and had 2 chemicals and a blighted ovum. We are now working with our third surrogate and getting ready to transfer at the end of June.
After our third transfer failed, we decided to start sharing our story via instagram, @makingbabybee2. Our first goal was to educate others in the process of surrogacy and everything that it entails. We wanted to show the happy moments as well as the terrible moments, and we’ve had plenty of them. It was an easy way to update our friends and family on our progress, but little did we know it would be so much more. It was an outlet for frustration and anger and somewhere to share the happy moments of our journey. We’ve also been lucky enough to meet a support system of cheerleaders, compiled of strangers from the internet, many who share a similar story as us. What started as a simple side project to keep busy while we waited through our surrogacy journey, led us to some great friendships who just “get it” and some good friends we’ve actually met in person. Everyone needs their support system on a journey like ours and we’ve found part of ours in the most unlikely place.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’re about to transfer for the 5th time so it has been the opposite of a smooth road. Just as any new journey begins, there are always bumps on the road. We’ve unfortunately hit many roadblocks and bad luck so far on our path. We hope our next transfer will be a lot smoother and “go as it should” so that we can bring home a baby in the end.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Full time I am a nurse practitioner in pediatric oncology. My past history of being a pediatric cancer patient led me to my job today. However, we are sharing our story via instagram and I am trying to learn all the tricks of the trade in sharing our story on social media. It has been a learning curve, stepping out of my comfort zone and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow our following as well as educate others.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think persistence and hope have helped get us where we are today. I can only hope that my attitude of not giving up helps pay off and we are able to bring a baby home in the end. I had a goal of having a sibling for our son and I am not ready to give up, despite how hard it has been. I’ve also held on to hope throughout this process. Hope that the next transfer will work. Hope that we will have a baby in our arms by next year. I always remind myself that each transfer is a new embryo, a new chance and new hope.
