Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Ormsby
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From an early age, I became very enthralled by movies, TV shows, and video work in general. College really made it clear that a visually creative degree was where I needed to be. UW-Stout helped me gain the necessary skills to turn a hobby into a career.
I’ve been doing video related projects since 2012. It started as fun little skits and short films with a very good friend of mine and has evolved to me starting a freelance videography company, Orm Studios, in addition to working as Creative Producer for Chippewa Valley Music Festivals.
As far as portfolio, I’ve worked on everything from short films, mini-docs, product videos, weddings, events, drone work and more. This year has been huge for music related projects, filming 14 bands’ performances so far as well as a music video and a couple band promos. I’ve also been pushing my drone work as well. I’m really excited to see what the remainder of this year will bring.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think I’d be concerned if I hadn’t had any bumps along the way. I feel like with most things you put your whole heart into, there will be setbacks or situations that aren’t ideal. There have been some times where I’m leaning between buying a piece of equipment to increase the quality of what I can do or waiting until I can afford it so I’m not putting my business in the red. There’s been some projects I’ve shot that had less than ideal lighting from a venue or poor communication from a client. I also didn’t major in business or take any business classes in college, so from that standpoint, it’s been quite an experience figuring it out as I go.
That said, it’s also one of those things where everything is a learning experience. I try not to stay in the negative headspace of the struggles I’ve had, but I use them to plan for how to make the next project that much better. Since 2012, I’ve learned a lot, upgraded a lot, and have grown so much.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a videographer and drone pilot based out of Eau Claire, WI and owner of my freelance business, Orm Studios. I’m kind of a jack of all trades when it comes to video work. I love working on something creative. As a musician, I definitely feel like I specialize in the music side of video projects, but that doesn’t mean I shy away from non-music related projects.
I’m most proud of the amount of music projects I’ve had this year. I’ve had the honor of filming some artists that I’ve listened to for many years and also some new artists I just found. Never in a million years, did I think I’d be able to do that.
What sets me apart from others would definitely be my drive. I want everything I make to be something amazing. The best project I’ve worked on. Sometimes that can bog me down a little, but I truly want to make videos that will make client beam with joy.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future include continuing to re-evaluate what types of projects I want to focus on for my freelance videography business, Orm Studios. I want to find my niche and be less of a jack of all trades and really pinpoint my vibe, style, and continue growing.
I’m looking forward to putting my Part 107 license to work and doing a lot more drone work. I think there’s a lot of untapped potential for new projects.
