Today we’d like to introduce you to Oswald Perez
Hi Oswald, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing as a kid. Mostly writing poems in my parent’s greeting cards. I didn’t know what I was doing would be considered poetry. But it was clear that I had something going. I further discovered that I had writing prowess when my English teacher in high school, Ms. Levy marked on my sheet of paper, “Oswald, you’re a poet!”.
I would slowly hone in on what I wanted to do. From a playwriting phase in college, two writing a pair of blogs. But it was poetry where my heart was. In the year 2020, I took the author Cathy Heller’s business course, Made To Do This. It was there where the mantra was discovered, Words Are Art. I’ve run with it since, posting primarily to my Instagram page.
I would release my first poetry book, A Poetic Journey, Staying At Home in 2020. And I’m currently in the midst of the paperback release of the book, with a follow up, A Poetic Summer on the horizon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road.
As I didn’t know what I wanted to do creatively. I read playwriting books during my college years and created short plays, mostly to script out a vision of what my life could look like. Then, I began to blog about my daily life.
That didn’t last either. I didn’t know what I wanted to do until it was discovered that I could write poetry.
But it was touch and go with getting my work in front of people.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write poems and post them on my Instagram feed. I also write longer pieces for my website and Substack. I also post videos of my reading poems too.
I’m proud of the fact that I was able to get my first book of poems out, A Poetic Journey, Staying At Home. With a follow up on the way.
I add a visual element to my pieces, whether it be photos from my travels, or pictures of places and things that I see along the way..
What were you like growing up?
I was more of an athletic person as a kid.
I would play volleyball. I would bowl and I would run. I won trophies and medals for my efforts as a kid. I wanted to play with everyone and do everything. Hyper and rambunctious with no sense of the difficulties that he had growing up with cerebral palsy.
I would become more of a quiet person once the surgeries began later in my childhood.
