Today we’d like to introduce you to Old Man Liver.
Hi Old Man, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved from Louisiana to Los Angeles years ago to do music and business. I spent 20 years in Los Angeles, starting my band, Earlydawn, which I still play guitar in to this day. I also started Venice, CA-based good luck charm retail company, Venice Voodoo, which I still have as well – although it’s now called Vegas Voodoo. Somewhere in there, I started a medical agency, called Platinum Healthcare Staffing, which I sold in 2010, and got into the record industry with a couple friends. When I moved to Las Vegas, about 11 years ago, I started more businesses including a real estate business, a septic & concrete business and a live entertainment company. More recently I acquired the World Famous Pioneer Saloon, a 111 year old “fixer upper”, which has been a true labor of love. I try not to get emotionally attached to businesses, but the Pioneer is truly something special. I feel a lot of obligation to be a good caretaker of the property.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship is rarely a smooth road. There are always struggles and persistence is key. I started a brand based on my nickname, Old Man Liver, which has really exploded over the last couple of years. It involves a whiskey, a beer, a book, music, hot sauce, and more. People will mention it being an overnight success, when they don’t realize that I started the project back in the early 2000’s. It took a lot of years to really take off.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Old Man Liver brand is all about having fun and poking fun at the world. However, the quality of the products are no joke. So, that’s been a winning combination for us. For the food & drink items, it’s all about being flavorful, whether it’s the smoky flavor in the Whiskey or the jalapeno bacon in the Old Man Liver Burger.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I’m in a lot of different industries and they are always changing. One always has to watch, feel and change with the times. When we started the record company, Artists Addiction Records, the industry was primarily CDs. Now, obviously, it’s mostly digital but currently vinyl is trending again. So, now we are pressing records again, which is crazy to think about.
