Today we’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Priscilla Ramcharan
Hi Mrs. Priscilla , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Being a wife and mother, an author, a teacher, a non-profit founder, and an entrepreneur have all been possible with the support, encouragement, and belief from the circle of amazing people in my life. I have always wanted to be a wife and mother, and am grateful to have started earlier on in life in order for our family to grow together. While I had always tutored and had teaching positions early on, it wasn’t until I had our children that teaching gradually became my profession as I began teaching at the schools they attended. And, while I had always loved the creative writing process, it wasn’t until I had our children that publishing became a reality. We’ve always told made-up stories to each other. Then, one day, my children and I decided that our stories are amazing and we should try to publish them. My daughter, at 9, agreed to illustrate for our books and she is incredible! She has been illustrating our books ever since. While they were young, going to school became a challenge and one day we decided to try homeschooling. Of course, I still needed to earn income, even it was part-time, and pursued teaching ESL online. I have been able to meet students from around the world from the comfort of our home and still be able to have time and flexibility with our family. Through online teaching, I have learned that we all have many aspects in common, especially the drive to communicate and succeed. While teaching is extremely rewarding, there was always an entrepreneurial drive within me, especially from watching my grandfathers hard at work for their own businesses. I was inspired to pursue multiple streams of income online as well. Today, we have published over 20 books, we have been homeschooling for over 7 years, I have launched our non-profit, and I have partnered with 2 companies to provide additional sources of income. In addition, I volunteer as a mentor to help start-up non-profits, which has been rewarding because of all of the dreamers and doers that I meet and help to achieve their goals. All of our accomplishments are possible mainly because I have an incredibly supportive husband who values our endeavors and contributes tremendously in each moment to our successes. Together, we are a super team and everything is possible with love and support.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is as smooth as you make it and “struggles” are a part of the process. My favorite quote is, “The road to success is always under construction” by Lily Tomlin, because we are always adapting, adjusting, rearranging, and rebuilding. My main struggle has been balancing work and life because working from home and homeschooling takes coordination and time management to a whole other level. As all of our indoor activities happen within the home space, we have learned how to better create family time on a regular basis. Sometimes activities end up overlapping where we can learn and play together. Throughout all of the learning experiences, we have focused on what works for us as a family and for the aspects that do not work, we have happily let those go. The most important learning take away is that as a family, we make decisions together as to how to coordinate each day and each activity because every day will not be the same. On the other hand, building businesses, a non-profit, and managing hobbies takes much fine-tuning in regards to adjusting to the evolving stages of life and learning what works and what does not work to help to create smoother roads ahead. As an educator, I am always open to learning and growing and much of these opportunities come from interacting with my family. I have learned that asking for help is necessary because we cannot do everything alone and working together is more effective and efficient, to ensure that the road is at least fun!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a teacher, author, entrepreneur, and non-profit founder. I specialize in content creation for all aspects of my work and I am known for my community building activities. I am most proud of all of the content that I have created over the years that included my family, colleagues, and the huge network that we have created and expanded, all while raising our family. As the saying goes, a solid foundation is necessary for stability, and I encourage everyone to focus on building your own foundation, one that makes you excited to create each day. My positivity, drive, and non-traditional way of operating sets me a part from others because my lifestyle allows me to allocate my time in ways that best fit my schedule. In other words, I choose where I give my time and attention. I have learned to be flexible, more understanding, more accommodating, and more patient with myself and others. These lessons came along once I separated what I can control and what I cannot control.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have been very fortunate to find my forever mentors since I was a teenager and we have grown together and have learned tons from each other. I recommend finding a mentor that resonates with you and aligns with your passions in work and in life. Having a mentor that you can connect with on all levels is highly important. There will be days when personal situations arise and you need someone who can help you to work through them, while helping you to stay on track with your work. And, over the years, I have met incredible people who have become mentors simply because they see my potential and want to help me to achieve the next levels. Those are the people who cheer you on because they want to. In regards to networking, it involves give and take from both ends because we all have value to offer and to receive. Learning what works and what does not work has helped me on my journey. And, most importantly, I have learned how to gracefully let go of what does not work. Having a mentor helps me to stay grounded when life gets hectic and to also help me to get excited about my successes. Oftentimes, we are always on to the next without giving love and attention to what we have accomplished. Having people around to celebrate with helps to bring light to a job well done! Take time to embrace your accomplishments and to reflect on what worked for you. Allow the inspiration for the next project to flow to you and the universe will deliver the people who can help you to bring it to fruition.
