Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Kay
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m an Australian singer now based in Hawaii. I studied music at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. I graduated WAAPA with a BA in music & was accepted into Honors. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in the year after graduating. I fought that for many years. Instead of further study I decided to focus my efforts on writing, performing & recovering. I worked in two working bands & sang along the west coast of Australia, the Pilbarra & Darwin. In 2021 I flew through the middle east in the middle of the pandemic & came to the United States where I now work in music. Grateful for my first single launch in Hawaii selling out September 2023.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely not an easy road… Chronic illness where you look okay on the outside really made it isolating to say the least. To be in immense pain internally while outwardly people question if it’s real was definitely a hard walk to go through but all in all it grew my ability to stay true to myself & what I knew to be real instead of letting external forces dictate direction. Immigration in the middle of the pandemic was hard as was being so far from family to… However all of these things gave me the ability to really dig deep & start to write more authentically from my soul as I came through the other side & walked towards recovery.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional singer & performing artist & I specialize in music that aims to help people feel heard with a pop/folk/gospel slant. My aim is to help people feel less alone through my music.
I’m proud of rebuilding my career after starting fresh in a new country.
What sets me apart from others i’d say is my focus on the music – soul connection through sound, work ethic & basically just never giving up. Failure & success effectively are both tools when used constructively.
