Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Johnson.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
LoveFamilyHealth began in 2015 as a lifestyle blog. I was three months away from welcoming my second baby and eager to rejoin the workforce. However, as a military spouse dealing with long stretches of my husband’s absence and the high cost of childcare, I realized I needed a way to earn extra income from home. Blogging seemed like a perfect fit.
In 2015, “Mom blogs” were all the rage, so I decided to give it a shot. But soon enough, I realized I didn’t quite fit into that category. I was definitely NOT a mom blogger.
As I wrestled with what to blog about, I found myself dabbling in home-based marketing gigs for a couple of small online businesses, when one of them asked me if I knew anything about marketing a business on Pinterest, and if I could assist them in targeting homeschool moms, their primary audience on the platform.
It was an intriguing proposition. After all, where do homeschool moms (or any mom, for that matter) hang out? Pinterest.
I dove headfirst into learning all I could. For months, I threw myself into learning the ins and outs of Pinterest marketing. During this time, I realized this market’s untapped potential. Surprisingly, there were few resources that taught you how to leverage Pinterest for marketing purposes. Back then, Pinterest was predominantly associated with craft ideas, recipes, and wedding inspiration.
That’s when it hit me: Pinterest would be my focus. By late 2015, my blog had evolved into a Pinterest Marketing blog, and as 2016 rolled around, I introduced my first Pinterest Marketing course, Pinterest Ninja.
As word about my Pinterest course spread, I began receiving inquiries about managing Pinterest accounts for businesses. Many companies lacked the time to learn the ins and outs of the platform and preferred to outsource the task.
By 2017, my client list was full.
My Pinterest Marketing business allowed me to work from anywhere. Regardless of where the Navy stationed us, I could still operate my business. It dawned on me then that I should create a course to teach others how to kickstart a successful Pinterest Virtual Assistant business. Not only were there numerous military spouses seeking remote work opportunities, but this was a venture any stay-at-home mom could pursue.
In 2018, I launched my second course, “How to Become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant.”
To date, I’ve sold almost 9,000 courses. I also manage a private online community where my students can collaborate and ask questions. Every month, I host live training sessions on Pinterest Marketing, providing valuable resources for those starting out or seeking ongoing success on the platform.
As cheesy as it sounds, seeing how you have helped others succeed is a pretty great feeling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting my own business wasn’t smooth sailing. I had no clue what I was doing, especially when it came to launching courses. The first time I launched my Pinterest course, I sold only 26 copies—a pretty disappointing number. I began to wonder if all the hard work was worth it. Only selling 26 courses was a pretty big hit to my confidence.
But I didn’t give up. I learned from that failure. A few months later, I relaunched my course, and this time, I sold over 300 copies. Completely bombing my first attempt at a course launch motivated me to work even harder and create an even better course.
I still hit roadblocks and have rough days, weeks, and months. But I think anyone who owns a business knows it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. But it’s always worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As you probably grasped from my introduction, I’ve been working in Pinterest Marketing for over 9 years now, and I have constantly been evolving alongside the platform’s ever-changing landscape.
Pinterest LOVES to throw us curveballs with frequent updates and tweaks. Being proactive about learning and adapting to these changes can give you a competitive edge and help you set you apart from the rest.
What I believe sets me apart from other Pinterest Marketing experts is my hands-on approach with my students. Whether it’s through email, Voxer, or my private student group, I’m there to provide personalized guidance and support. I believe in going beyond just teaching and truly helping my students navigate any challenges they encounter. It’s this dedication to their success on a personal level that I pride myself on and what I belive sets me apart from others.
How do you define success?
Success is deeply personal and I feel like success can look very different from one person to another. For some, it may mean achieving financial stability or reaching specific career milestones. For others, success could be about finding fulfillment in personal relationships, maintaining good health, or making a positive impact on their community or the world. Ultimately, defining success involves identifying what truly matters to you and striving to achieve those goals with purpose and integrity.
