Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Dominguez
Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all began when I was born in New York City. Then a couple years later my mother joined the Navy, and that’s when my journey of traveling to different states started. Eventually, she met my sister’s dad, and we moved to Miami. It was there, during middle school, that I started hanging out with the skater crowd. One day, I picked up a camera, and from that moment on, I’ve never wanted to put it down. Photography became my passion. Now, I aim to create art through my lens—capturing vivid images that tell a story and evoke emotions, allowing others to feel what I see.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. When I was younger, the challenges of affording top-tier gear and high-quality cameras were constant. Investing in the best equipment is crucial in photography, but it also comes with its financial pressures—especially when you’re just starting and trying to break into the industry. On top of that, securing paid gigs was a major hurdle. It took time to build a portfolio, network with the right people, and establish a reputation.
The process of evolving as a photographer involves much more than just technical skill. It requires an understanding of the industry’s dynamics, including how to market yourself, negotiate rates, and build lasting relationships with clients. Gaining traction in a competitive field like photography means staying adaptable, continuously improving, and learning to navigate the ever-changing landscape of new technologies and trends. But despite the struggles, every setback has been an opportunity to learn and grow, both creatively and professionally.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a photographer with a deep passion for capturing the energy of musicians, fashion, and festivals. My work focuses on telling stories through dynamic images, whether it’s the raw emotion of a live performance, the vibrance of fashion, or the electrifying atmosphere of a festival. I specialize in blending creativity and technical precision to create visuals that not only capture moments but evoke feelings.
I’m also known for being a social butterfly especially in Seattle, where I thrive in connecting with new people and immersing myself in diverse creative communities. This helps me stay plugged into the latest trends and brings a unique, dynamic energy to my work.
What I’m most proud of is how my photography has allowed me to build a reputation and relationships within these industries. The ability to consistently tell a story through my lens and create images that resonate with others is what drives me. What sets me apart is my ability to capture not just the visual aspect of an event, but the emotion and atmosphere that surround it. Whether it’s the energy of a live show, the elegance of fashion, or the excitement of a festival, I focus on making each shot feel alive and immersive, leaving a lasting impact on the viewer.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Instagram and Twitter have been invaluable resources for me. They’ve allowed me to stay connected with other creatives, discover new trends, and build a community around my work. Instagram, in particular, has been a great platform for showcasing my photography and engaging with an audience, while Twitter helps me stay updated on industry news, collaborate with other professionals, and participate in conversations that inspire me.
