Today we’d like to introduce you to Marjorie Kaye
Hi Marjorie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Visual arts have always been my concentration, but I have been involved in all the art forms over the years. There were notable experiences and instances which have enhanced my work as my major focus in my life, most notably, being exposed to the nature of art and the responsibilities of being an artist. My mentor, Arnold Trachtman’s words “Art is a 24 hour, 7 days a week job” rings true to this day, as it has over the many years. I am extremely fortunate, as it is waking up into that deep part of the self that art realizes within.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t know too many people who can say that their art journey has always been smooth! There were certainly some trying circumstances, but there is no question that it is the art itself that is the sustenance. Most of my struggles have revolved around money and making a living while living my art life to its fullest. That is not an unusual experience. But as you know, as an artist you end up utilizing a zillion parts of the brain, and not all of it is involving making the work. I still dream about waking up, painting, and going to sleep without any other intruding activities such as administrating and grant writing. But these are necessities we deal with.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is currently centered around meticulous, detailed energy paintings on shaped panels. The shapes are the skeletal bounds for the painting activity to emerge from – in other words, the painting itself is influenced by the shape of the panel. My work is always utilizing color to define spatial relationships.
I have been isolating the shapes to examine and delve further into their energetic nature. I am finding limitless potential in particular intuitive algorithms, with an infinite number of patterns that can be determined from the visual arrangement of mathematical suggestions. In this new series, space is broken down as it emerges from the center. There is a combination of organic and geometric sensibilities, and although there is a tip of the hat to symmetry, it is not always prevalent. It is the previous shape that determines the responding one, and regardless of the intense detail, there is not always precision involved.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have been living in North Adams, MA for about 2.5 years now and am discovering that I absolutely love small city life. There is a very supportive community of artists and art lovers, entrepreneurs and it is all extremely stimulating and accessible. I love the accessibility of so many cultural institutions, such as Mass MoCA and the Clark Museum. I love the fact that you can drive for 3 minutes and be out of the city into the beautiful mountains.
I would love to be even more settled in the country, but it’s a trade off right now. The city is still the city and I could see myself hibernating in a country setting if given the right circumstances.
