Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Griffith.
Hi Mackenzie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in California with a penchant for adrenaline and mischief. If there’s a way I can go fast, feel strong, and somehow hurl my body through space, I’ll find it.
This path led me to trying lots of sports and consistently having fitness as a backbone of my existence (feeding myself with correct nutrition came much later, I’m afraid, but we got there in the end!).
Eventually people started asking me what I did for exercise/training, and sometimes even asking me to train them, though it wasn’t (yet!) my job. This sparked the idea that I could get educated and paid doing the thing I loved—flexing my muscles.
But it turns out there’s a bit more to it than that.
First I got a personal training certificate, which only taught me what muscles are and an equation for calories. It taught me nothing about how to teach people movement, nor how to correct the very common imbalances the average person has.
So I dove deeper and became a Human Movement Specialist, which really helped me train people effectively and make their movement patterns safe and gorgeous.
But I soon realized that all the training in the world won’t do much if you’re not eating to support your goals, be it losing weight or building muscle or improving overall fitness. So onward I went to become certified as a Nutrition Coach, which made a huge impact on my trainee’s results.
I knew I didn’t want to work in a gym and count people’s reps all day; I didn’t want to be a babysitter, I wanted to teach people how they can do this on their own for more or less the rest of their lives. Which meant taking my business online, and that revealed more weaknesses I had to shore up—how to coach people online about changing their behaviors around movement and nutrition.
So I hired coaches to teach me how to be an online coach! It’s a whole different skill set than working in a gym!
Through all of this, I’ve iterated my coaching style, my program, and the type of people I love to work with. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t work for building longterm health habits.
Every mistake there is to make about exercise and nutrition I’ve made it, and because of that I’ve been able to help people navigate their journey with more ease and better results.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I became an adolescent and adult in the 2000s, a time when the “right track” was to get good grades, go to college, then get a career reflective of what you studied, which never felt aligned for me, even though I loved school and learning.
My little Sagitterrorist heart had plans to try everything at least once, and I do mean everything. Jobs of mine include:
Bookseller
Alaskan Cannery Worker
Book Designer
Private Investigator Assistant
Warehouse Manager/Forklift Driver
Speedboat License Tester
Travel Writer
Mountain Dew Party Rep
Chocolatier
Bollywood DJ Assistant
General Contractor
AND NOW: Adventure Strength and Nutrition Coach
Friends and family like to joke that I’ve already lived several lives, but it still feels like I’ve only just scratched the surface of my Mad Mac adventures. A sporadic path like mine has the benefit of learning so many things and meeting so many kinds of people, but the downside is not feeling in sync with societal expectations, and feeling a bit unmoored as to the direction of my life.
Through it all there runs a common thread of freedom to roam, autonomy in daily life, endless pursuit of fun and pleasure, and uninhibited optimism.
I had to ask myself: “In an ideal world with no rules or limitations, what would I want to do everyday?”
I wanted to build an Amazon nation of strong, brilliant, adventurous women, quick to laugh and lift each other up.
Thus The Adventure Ready Academy was born.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
There are a million ways to do the Fitness & Nutrition Thing, and everyone needs to find the flavor that works for them until they shuffle off this mortal coil, making Sustainability and Enjoyment the crosshairs of any movement and nutrition habits that are built to last.
The Adventure Ready Academy is an online group program for women who want to use their body to express their physical freedom—the ability to DO whatever their heart desires when the mood strikes, and to do it with strength, vigor, and pain-free.
They want to eat in a way that fuels their strength and endurance, gives them a reasonably athletic body composition (visible muscles, please!), and allows space for tasty treats and #oraljoy.
I train women who care deeply about their health and taking care of their body while also wanting to strike a balance between health and hedonism—there’s room for both!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Like many entrepreneur types, I can get a bit compulsive when it comes to learning new stuff. While learning is wonderful and important, it’s crucial to allow space for that knowledge to soak in and resonate with the parts of you that need it.
I’ve been taking the space to put my knowledge into action and see what aligns with my journey. This first quarter of the year will be about creating more than taking in new information.
