Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Akinyemi
Linda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
the time, it became a launchpad for my future in project management. Whether working in the financial, media, or engineering industry, I honed skills crucial for any project manager: communication, problem-solving, organization, budget management, and leadership. I embraced every learning opportunity and sought out guidance from those around me. I made a point to align myself with project management tasks, attending meetings and learning about different methodologies on my own time. This proactive approach not only expanded my knowledge but also helped me develop a deep understanding of what it takes to successfully manage projects across various sectors.
My interests, education, and experience ultimately led to a successful proposal to manage construction and renovation projects for my current employer, where I continue to be challenged and contribute in a meaningful way. Along the way, I’ve gained a wealth of valuable lessons and insights that have shaped my approach to project management. I’m forever grateful to every boss and mentor who has invested in me, shared their wisdom, and helped me grow both professionally and personally. Each of them has played a crucial role in my journey, and their guidance continues to inspire me every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The industry is still largely dominated by men, and while women have made significant strides, we’re still somewhat in the minority. And that’s really unfortunate, because I know so many amazing female tradespeople and project managers. We’re just as competent and quick as any of the men, and we know our stuff. It’s encouraging to see the industry slowly but surely making the business case for the fact that everyone, regardless of gender or background, has the tools and opportunities to succeed.
That shift is happening, albeit at a gradual pace. However, it’s also crucial that we remain visible, not only for our own advancement but for the benefit of future generations. By exposing youth to the industry and supporting initiatives in schools and workplaces, we can inspire and empower the next generation. This will hopefully create a lasting impact, driving a permanent shift in our industry’s demographic. It’s all about showing that talent and capability are not determined by gender, but by skill and passion.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a PM, I’m responsible for overseeing and managing projects from inception to completion. My role is crucial in ensuring these projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards while coordinating with various stakeholders. Whether I’m managing millions or thousands of dollars in construction projects, there really is no typical day. Every project, regardless of its size or budget, brings its own set of challenges and requires constant attention to detail. From coordinating with contractors and suppliers to resolving unexpected issues on-site, no two days are ever the same. The ability to adapt, prioritize, and stay organized is crucial, as each day can involve a different mix of tasks—from budget management and project planning to handling unforeseen obstacles that arise in real-time. The unpredictability is part of what makes the role both demanding and rewarding.
I also make frequent site visits to check the progress of my projects. I like to get out of the office to see what’s happening on the ground. During these visits, I ensure that the quality of work is being maintained, and I conduct safety and environmental inspections to verify that the work is being carried out safely and sustainably. There’s truly nothing like the feeling of successfully delivering a project that will make a positive impact on people’s lives. That sense of accomplishment is always a great motivation and a reminder of why I do what I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being consciously aware of my blessings, both big and small, is something I value deeply. It helps me stay grounded and appreciative of life’s gifts. I find joy in being kind to others without expecting anything in return, as it brings fulfillment and connection. Spending quality time with my family and friends is essential, as those relationships are a constant source of love and support. I also make time for exercise and prioritize getting enough rest to maintain my physical and mental well-being. Above all, maintaining a personal relationship with God gives me peace and perspective. All of these things together bring me great joy and keep me centered in both my personal and professional life.
