Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Spencer
Hi Leah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I actually went to college for something entirely different. At the time I didn’t know I had an untouched hidden love for jewelry. Throughout Jr high and high school, and even college, I took many art classes. But had never considered jewelry-making to be one of my greatest passions. Throughout college I attended many music festivals and art festivals, and I met creative people out in Los Angeles during my last semester in college. Someone put wire in my hands and it took off from there. I started small just trying to wrap my head around how to showcase stones, while experimenting and just having fun! Now I continue to create from my heart, and have pushed myself further into my craft. I will always continue learning and growing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Choosing the creative path isn’t always easy. It comes with its own challenges such as growing an audience and clients. Building up your connections on social media and learning how to network. Getting yourself out there can be intimidating at first. Also maintaining a healthy lifestyle while continuing to push your creative boundaries can be difficult as well. I find that I hit creative blocks from time to time, and I have to work through them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work mainly with sterling silver wire and sheet metal. And incorporate fine gemstones to create pendants, bracelets, rings and haircombs. At this point I believe that people recognize my work through my signature style, as well as my character pendants that are usually based off of older cartoons. I’m most proud of my personal progress in general as an artist in this community!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was actually my first time doing a horseback riding competition! I had many adventurous passions when I was younger.
