Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Marotta
Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Creative expression has always been an essential part of my journey. I believe creativity helps us thrive in difficult times, and allows us to understand ourselves deeply as human beings, as individuals and as a collective.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. There has been self-doubt, constant imposter syndrome, and a never ending need to find resiliency in times where I had no ability and seemingly no good reason to keep moving forward. These things are part of the journey, and self-awareness and staying true to who you are is the only way through. Art can be a voice in times where we do not have one, and creativity allows us to let out what we are keeping inside, so it doesn’t eat away at us.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
First and foremost, I’m an artist. I create many things, but my favorite medium is painting. I love to create works around nature and animals, and portraits. I’ve always been very connected to nature, and I am drawn to plants, animals, and the earth. I am also inspired by human nature, and different communities, cultures and how people live.
I work in oils, acrylic, watercolor, alcohol inks, pen and ink, and graphite. I sometimes include mixed media materials in my pieces. I am most proud of the evolution of my artwork over the years, and building a community arts center in the city I live in, Worcester, Massachusetts.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Im a highly extroverted person, and during covid-19, I had to learn to find other ways to stay connected with my friends and family, and find ways to direct my creative energy and fill my time. I created a lot of artwork, and became more okay and comfortable with silence, and slowness.
