Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Greene

Hi Kate, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

Hello! My name is Kate Greene, and I’m the CEO of Owl’s Head Solutions. We are a certified woman-owned creative agency that started with one designer and a 12” laptop and grew to a 12-person agency in its first decade. In all those years, one thing has remained the same…we give a hoot! Everyone at Owl’s Head is here because they want to make great work with great people for the greater good.

Over the past ten years, some of the biggest and most successful PR agencies like Edelman, Evoke, bcw Global, and Health Unlimited have trusted us to produce award-winning creative work for their clients. In other words, we’re the agency the big guys and gals turn to when they need to get it right.

Today, we’re making a name for ourselves beyond the PR industry, working directly with clients ranging from biotechs to government and research agencies to climate resilience organizations. Pushing into new industries keeps us sharp, and keeps things interesting.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Is any road worth taking smooth? No, it hasn’t all been smooth. The highs have been incredibly high, and the lows have been painfully low—but they are OUR highs and lows. IYKYK.

Our biggest challenge came post-COVID, when the perfect storm of tech layoffs, bank collapses, relief funding drying up, and more, slashed our revenue to less than half of the previous year’s.

In response to these setbacks, we had to adapt and rethink our strategy to keep the business afloat. This meant making some tough decisions, including two rounds of layoffs. My husband and I stopped drawing salaries altogether. This period was undoubtedly a low point, as our team shrank from 12 to just 4 employees. However, we managed to turn things around by diversifying into new industries and securing grant funding.

During this time, I dedicated myself to enhancing my knowledge in all things business, leadership, and sales. I took advantage of every opportunity for free education, participating in programs like a six-month intensive course through the SBA, a sales accelerator course through the Duplessy Foundation, and EOS training through WBENC. Additionally, as a member of VISTAGE, I received invaluable guidance from my coach and mentor, Mike Thorne. His support was instrumental in helping me navigate these challenges. I’m immensely grateful for these educational programs and the incredible individuals behind them, who played a crucial role in the survival and resurgence of Owl’s Head Solutions.

Our resilience is/was also very much due to the unwavering dedication and commitment of our incredible employees. The collective spirit of our team has been the cornerstone of our ability to rebuild and move forward. Their support and loyalty during these tumultuous times were nothing short of remarkable, and it’s their contribution that has been fundamental to our ongoing journey.
