Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Taylor
Hi Jordan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started singing and performing at a pretty young age, I was in small shows and choirs starting in kindergarten with my first solo being in 1st grade! I was Mother Goose for a musical about nursery rhymes. I think from there one thing really just followed after the other. I continued with choir then into orchestra playing the violin when I was in 6th grade and when I moved to El Paso I got into theatre and into a local youth rock band/orchestra, and that was where I got my first chance to experience what it was like to perform music differently in that aspect.
What’s more is even though I was in theatre I wasn’t much of an extrovert at this time so performing as a vocalist was this brand new territory that honestly terrified me. In theatre, you play a character but when I was performing music, it was completely me and I wasn’t able to hide behind a violin nor amongst an orchestra or choir every time. Over the years it’s definitely gotten easier but I know there’s always room to grow.
I’ve also always been a writer, writing stories and poems which eventually lead to me trying my hand at songwriting. I entered into a voice competition with an old friend of mine and that’s where I met the first producer/engineer I began to work with, Layoh at Au Fait Studios. There, I was able to develop and harness my songwriting and performance skills even more, putting out my earliest work between 2016 & 2019! It was so exciting for me to start embarking on this journey in what was like a whole new world but where I felt so free and open. Of course, the year 2020 soon approached and a mix of COVID restrictions and my degree brought about a small hiatus between me and my music. I graduated and found myself back in the arts scene in 2022, absolutely thrilled but a little hesitant on where to “begin again”.
I found myself soon surrounded by other creatives and at the front of new and opening doors that I am ever grateful and blessed to have been given the opportunity to be at. Since then, I’ve been back in the studio and performing around town making a living this way, something 2016 me couldn’t have possibly fathomed at the time. Everything I do and everyone I meet is held dear to my heart and I couldn’t be more elated to be sharing even just a little bit of my story with you today. Where I am at this moment in my career is by the grace of God and the amazing support I’ve had the honor of having in my life and on this journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been smooth sailing and isn’t always easy peasy as of today either. In life, we are always learning and evolving, doing our best to try to do what’s best for ourselves and also maintain relationships amongst other daily necessities.
As I’ve grown as an individual and an artist I’ve learned about just how much time and effort it takes to do what I’m doing as well as what kind of sacrifices I would have to make in order to reach the goals I have. I think one of the hardest things in a personal aspect is the cycle of finding those who will stick by you and support you regardless of what it takes and also still learning to be okay with a little bit of FOMO. It’s a bit funny about the FOMO but it’s very real, I’m a young adult and there’s things that I could be out doing with friends and family that I may not have the availability to do due to career path that I’ve chosen. So it can be this weird seesaw effect on my emotions of heavily wanting to pursue this line of work but also wanting to be with my loved ones… thankfully they are so supportive of what I do and it makes it a little bit easier even when it starts to feel like it’s not.
On top of all that, when you’re a creative or a small business owner you wear many hats, you are your own marketer, content creator, CEO, CFO, COO etc. It’s a TON of work for one person and can become a bit overwhelming at times especially when you’re just starting off! So that in and of itself has been a rollercoaster.
And of course, at the end of the day, making sure I do what I need to do to take care of myself as well while keeping up with such a busy schedule, but loving every minute of it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I feel like I do a variety of things, but I would probably be first recognized as a singer and known to be a sort of chameleon since I’m always told I have an everchanging look. I am a vocalist, a writer, a character actor and in every job that I do I believe in going big or going home. The effort you put in is the reaction you’ll get back & a chain reaction you can start, which I think is what I may be most proud of. The dedication and effort I put into the things I do is because I know the experience would matter to me so I know it matters to those who are reaching out to me about the events I work or in the art I create.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me I connecting with the audiences I reach in whatever format it may be: in my singing, character acting, writing etc.. I really just want to make a difference or impact in some way or another whether it’s providing quality live music, a core memory for the children of the community or like I mentioned before, simply creating an experience that leaves a lasting impression. Then, right next to that is community, which I hope to see continue to grow not only in general but in the creative arts. The world is already a tough place to be in and only we can make it better amongst ourselves. Art is healing and people can be too, it just depends on when and how we take the steps to do so for ourselves and each other. As creatives, we are ‘nothing’ without the love and support of those around us, and the least we can do is give back in return. Community begins and ends with us, and I want to keep it going.
