Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Labita Ashley Laneve
Hi Jessica Labita, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We’re real sisters. We have a connection that’s obviously been lifelong. We know each other better than anyone. People have always told us that we should have a talk show because we are so funny and entertaining together. We never really took it too seriously, but we reached a point in our life, where it was time to talk about our messy childhood and see if we could help other people. Our parents went through a bad divorce when we were kids. It was a traumatic event that changed and shaped us as humans. Our sister got pregnant young on the night she lost her virginity. Our Dad is a triplet, so we have a giant crazy family. We wanted to talk about all of this, who we are, and help other people who may have relatable experiences. As a wife and mom of two (12 and 14) my kids are fairly independent and allow me more professional independence than in the past. I work an amazing corporate job and have been experiencing lots of organizational change. I’ve been in marketing for 20+ years and recently took on a new role, coaching my organization through a new business operating model. It’s really stretching me out of my comfort zone professionally. So, to maintain my social media presence and marketing skills as I took on a coaching role, it seemed like the natural time to take on the podcast. It was a way to allow me to continue to be creative and challenge myself, provide advice to our audience, and learn all about connecting with professionals in my business life – it all sort of just came together at once. One day Ashley and I were talking about life and the subject of doing a podcast came up again – it was an impulsive discussion and decision – but we decided to just go for it. And it’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, we’ve made lots of mistakes! We started trying to do this podcast ourselves out of Ashley’s kitchen – that was not the greatest idea. Ashley won a “podcast kit” at a tricky tray, so we were like, cool let’s just do this ourselves and get started. We really wanted to create a high-quality video podcast. We quickly realized we needed so much more equipment than the kit provided. We had to buy more mics, a camera, a podcast recorder with inputs to manage separate voice tracks, good lighting, a MacBook, and the podcast editing software. Overall, we bought a ton of equipment and spent quite a bit of money building our own setup. That was a mistake, but hey, we learned. We very quickly realized how much work goes into production and editing. We wanted to do this right, so we admitted we didn’t have all the skills and expertise needed to do this the way we really wanted to and decided to hire an agency partner. We launched our first episode shooting in Adapting Social’s studio and have left the editing and production in their expert hands ever since. This saves us a ton of time. Podcast production is a lot of work! It’s been quite the learning process, and we are still making improvements even working with an expert agency.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Authenticity and humor 100%! You must be your true-self, or your audience will smell the bullshit and change the channel. We’re honest, harsh, crass, we curse, and we think we’re funny as hell, but we are always just us. We also have similar views on certain things and different views on other things, so it keeps the discussions interesting. We’re not afraid to talk about difficult topics or touch on things that others might not, for fear of being “cancelled.” We embrace difficult conversations. We also try to be lighthearted and supportive of people who are brave enough to come sit with us. We plan episode topics well in advance but never script anything. We make bulleted notes to remind us of what we want to talk about, but never script it. Anything we discuss we are enthusiastic about so our authenticity shines through in every episode. Plus, we’re just having conversations as sisters and best friends. It’s so easy, so organic, and so natural. We choose guests that inspire us. We love to talk to everyone and value both similarities and differences. A podcast is a great forum to talk about controversial topics because we believe conversations and understanding different perspectives can help make the world a better place. We plan what we want to speak about with guests beforehand, but again, never scripted. We ask them if there are certain things that they’re enthusiastic about so we can be sure they’re leveraging our platform to get their message across to our audience. We want our guests to feel that their time with us is a win-win for all. We’re also respectful that there are topics that may be off limits for certain people. The most important things are for us all to have a fun time, find commonalities, discuss differences, to laugh, share, and learn from one another. Genuineness, relatability, and respect for our guests and listeners are what help us continue to connect. They know we’re real and we’re here to be vulnerable with them. It’s so therapeutic for us, our guests, and our audience!
