Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Highsmith
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Writing and media has always been my passion. My journey began in 5th Grade, unfortunately I can’t remember my teacher or the school, but I do remember being pushed to my fullest capabilities as a very young writer. My first book was entitled “A Journey to the Past.” I was always into history and Sci-Fi as a child, so it was befitting for me to create a story about a kid who somehow takes a journey to the past to talk to prominent civil rights leaders like Rosa Parks and Dr. Luther King Jr. I even created illustrations along with the story. That story won me honorable mention within the school district for young authors that year. From that moment on I have been in love with media and journalism and with every venture I somehow try to incorporate both.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy road. Some of my struggles have been lack of direction and motivation. I wasn’t always 100% sure of myself and it would have been great to have the adults around me to aid in not only directing me within my path but also motivating me to along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
For the past few years I have ventured into the world of Podcasts, creating and hosting my own show, We Don’t Sip Tea We Drink Wine. Dabbling in topics from Mental Health, to the history of the Black Panthers and even exploring the unfair treatment within our criminal justice system. After Covid, like many of us, my direction completely changed and I started writing again. Collaborating with Lipstick N Lyrics, I write two pieces every week reviewing the latest music releases within R&B. I am also a content creator and assist others in content creation, social media management and etc.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
A mentor can come from anywhere. While many may seek out mentors specifically within their fields of interests, be sure not to discount those around you shaping your community and your life in a positive way, they too can be considered a mentor! While I haven’t had too much luck in finding mentors in my field of interest, I have found mentors in my place of work with people I have connected with or places where I have spent time volunteering.
