Today we’d like to introduce you to Idara Tom.
Hi Idara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child, my art journey began with crude drawings on the walls of my family home.
Given the fact that I was always fascinated by the world of colours and textures, I would spend hours scribbling with crayons, drawing, and experimenting with different mediums.
My parents, seeing my dedication, offered their support, and my passion intensified.
As I grew older, my art evolved, influenced by personal and shared experiences, the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria, and the world around me… as I worked towards capturing the essence of human existence.
I am grateful for the journey that has brought me here and as I continue to create, I am reminded of the power of art to inspire, uplift and bring people together.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My art journey has been a bumpy path, filled with twists and turns.
However, it has led me to where I am presently – a passionate artist, driven by love for colours, textures, and the endless possibilities of the creative process.
Some of the struggles I experienced include:
1. Self-doubt and criticism: At first my lines were shaken, and uncertain, but I kept practicing, and made sure to remind myself I wasn’t pursuing perfection.
2. Networking and marketing: experienced difficulty promoting my work, building relationships with galleries, collectors, and other artists.
3. Competition: standing out in a crowded art market where there is high competition for attention and opportunities.
4. Rejection and criticism: dealing with negative feedback, rejection from galleries, or harsh critiques.
5. Art market trends: Adapting to changing trends, tastes and technologies in the art world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in figurative paintings which explores themes like identity, the human condition / experiences in a bid to spark meaningful conversations and reflections.
I am known for emphasizing texture and details on my paintings as my art often incorporates intricate texture and details, inviting viewers to explore the tactile qualities of my pieces.
I’m most proud of the unique style I’ve developed overtime in my practice.
It is a distinctive technique that sets my works apart… this includes vibrant colours, bold chunks of colour from my palette knife, and attention to details.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Personality wise, I was that bubbly kid, who’d almost never be caught in a bad state; as I was always cheerful and wearing a smile.
Interest wise, I was very curious and adventurous, and always up for exploration. Hence I spent time being mischievous with my friends and spent long hours practicing drawing.
In a nutshell I’d say I was lucky to have amazing role models in my life, including my parents; who taught me the importance of hardwork, empathy and kindness… all of which helped shape me into a passionate, creative and goal driven person, who is always looking for a way to create impact.
