Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Roberts
Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started going to work at 4 years old with my father. Over the years, I had various jobs and enjoyed the more entrepreneurial and creative aspects of running a business. This would come in handy when I was hired to start a small sales team for a burgeoning online company in the year 1999. That company would turn out to be Autotrader.com and as a result, I was able to further my career, eventually owning a Luxury Real Estate Magazine and Public Relations Firm. It was about 12 years into being an independent business person that I became severely ill. So ill that I could not do basic tasks like cooking or laundry. Having 6 children made this situation even more stressful. Not being able to be a caregiver to my children was the main reason I started my latest company, Mom Bomb. I quickly realized that there must be thousands of families like mine – we weren’t affluent enough to hire help when I got sick, but not indigent enough to qualify for state or federal services. Not being able to do simple things like cook for my children or do laundry was so frustrating, that I thought if I could start a company that made enough money to fund a charity that will help other mothers, like me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t know if I would have the gumption to start again after going through the agony of building something so big from scratch again. Here are some of the things I’ve dealt with that have been less than desirable:
1) I was targeted by a conman and through a series of unfortunate events had my life savings stolen.
2) The company struggled getting funding because investors couldn’t wrap their minds around the fact that we give our profits to charity. Explaining that taking care of customers in good times and bad is a core tenant of growing a company and that there is a way to make money without being greedy, was as effective as a lifejacket made of cement.
3) Jumping into an industry in which I had no experience caused us to grow more slowly than I would have liked.
HOWEVER, I never stopped even when I wanted to. As a result, I did manage to get us National Distribution in Whole Foods and Several Regional Supermarkets and our sell through is amazing! Because of that we have appointments with giant mass market retailers that will catapult us into a different stratosphere. So the lesson here is this: There will be pain no matter what you do. If you don’t stop and truly believe in your cause, it will happen. NEVER GIVE UP.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve truly given birth to Mom Bomb. Creating natural bath and shower products that are good for you has been the greatest project of my life. When I became aware that most all of the bath products in mass market contain endocrine disrupting fragrances and colorants, I knew there was a better way. I mean, how counterintuitive that bath salts advertised as relaxing and soothing are actually harming our hormones? We stripped out all of the bad, kept the good and enhanced our formulas with natural plant based fragrances, root powers, dyes and clays for coloring and other skin enhancing benefits and wrapped it all together in a beautiful French inspired gift package. Natural Luxury doesn’t have to be expensive and consumers deserve better.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was 5 my father took me to see Olivia Newton-John as a surprise. It was amazing!
