Today we’d like to introduce you to Gouri Dixit
Hi Gouri, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Content Strategist and SEO for brands, i.e., I create content to help them gain visibility and business. The journey to being a content strategist started from being a content writer.
My story is similar to that of the shepherd in “The Alchemist.” I was searching for my treasure elsewhere and found it very unexpectedly in a different place altogether.
I have always loved writing since childhood but never considered it a profession. It was while studying computer science engineering that the seed of writing as a profession planted itself.
While in college, I joined the Toastmasters International organization, which started me on my writing path. Writing speeches during my time in the organization made me realize that writing was my calling all along. In 2020, I came across the term “freelancing” while preparing for a speech, and a new avenue opened for me!
After graduating, I decided not to opt for a job but to experiment with freelancing. Soon, in 2022, I landed my first writing internship, which paved the way for me to the 2+ years of journey that brought me to content strategy.
Now, I’ve worked with 10+ clients spanning over four countries. My clientele includes industries such as EdTech, Real estate, Lifestyle, Design, HR and recruitment, and content marketing brands.
Working with brands on their content strategy helped me realize that I love strategizing as much as writing. In fact, it was the “strategy” part that made content writing so much more interesting.
So, I upgraded myself from a content writer to a content strategist. Again, it was not an overnight decision but one taken after quite some consideration. The fact that I started working on my own blog strategy only helped.
In January 2024, I started my website blog, Path To Content, to reach out to new clients and to help educate beginner writers and freelancers about the world of writing and marketing. As I was handling the SEO and strategy for my end-to-end blog, I was given real-life experience of the challenges brands usually face when building their blog.
Now, I help them strategize their marketing so they won’t face the same challenges. My work primarily focuses on making my clients’ lives easier by figuring out their marketing for them. I figure out their marketing and help them with SEO strategy, blogging, and LinkedIn marketing.
It has been a blessing to discover writing as a passion and a profession. It’s my only way to express myself, and I’m happy to help my clients with it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It would be a lie to say it was a smooth road. Honestly, trying out something new always has its fair share of struggles. But that’s what makes the journey interesting.
For me, the struggles have been a lesson that only helped me develop my skills.
One struggle was learning and adapting to the whole solopreneurship world. Because you’re on your own and, most importantly, manage everyone by yourself, dealing with everything at once can get tough.
It was difficult in the beginning to strike a balance and create a routine that makes time for everything important.
Another struggle was creating a boundary between work and life while working from home. When you’re working from home and freelancing, it becomes difficult to switch off from work. It was something I struggled with a lot in the early days. But now, I’ve created healthy boundaries and habits that help me balance my work and life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Content Strategist and SEO for small to mid-sized B2B businesses, brands, and startups. I create content for my clients to help them gain online visibility and increase business.
As a part of my job, I handle my clients’ blog strategy, marketing, and content strategy for their founders’ LinkedIn.
I audit their websites, create a complete roadmap and strategy about how their content should look like, what kind of content will help them build online authority, and what content will drive sales. Then, I chalk an implementation roadmap and create blog and LinkedIn content.
The most proud I’ve been is of those projects where I had to take up some new kind of work and still succeeded in providing the desired results to my clients. That’s the best part about working in a creative space—you have room for experimentation and learning new every day.
To answer the question about what sets me apart from others, it’ll be three things:
a) Firstly, I’ve heard from all my clients and audience on LinkedIn that I can simplify complex topics without dumbing them down. This has helped me deal with many complex client niches as I can find some angles to make it easy for the audience while making it interesting.
b) Second, I’m always on time with my deliverables, so my clients never have to deal with delays or last-minute hiccups, as we’re always ahead of schedule.
c) Finally, I always take time (2-3 weeks) when onboarding clients to truly understand their needs. It helps me craft a strategy that works for them and really get into my client’s mind. It’s a crucial part of my job as it greatly reduces back-and-forths.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I’m no expert, but I’d like to answer this question based on my own experience and that of others I know. It comes from being a freelancer and solopreneur.
When starting out, the most important thing you should consider is if you have enough money to sustain you for 6 months to a year. Freelancing is hard, and establishing your business takes time. You shouldn’t get into it if you haven’t figured out how to manage your money if you have to struggle initially.
Another thing beginners should work on is building a strong network or a community. Many underestimate the power a network holds in the world of freelancing. Many of my new clients have come through either referrals or a fellow peer’s recommendation.
Also, when surrounded by the right people, you’re always among the first to learn about anything new in your industry. Networking with experts brings you opportunities you never thought about.
You grow faster when you’re in the right company.
I’d always recommend that any beginner consider these two areas in any industry.
