Today we’d like to introduce you to Genelle Sedon.
Hi Genelle , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
C & G Tutoring began as a small, grassroots tutoring service, leveraging basic yet powerful tools like Facebook, a Google Voice phone number to connect with potential clients, and three tutors.
C & G Tutoring has grown into one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s premier educational service providers over the last seven years, evolving from a small operation to a company that now serves a wide range of academic needs across nearly every public and private school in the region. C & G Tutoring quickly recognized the importance of adapting to the individual needs of each student. By focusing on personalized instruction and high-quality tutoring, we soon became known for our commitment to educational excellence, gradually expanding our team to meet rising demand.
One of the major factors in C & G Tutoring’s expansion has been its ability to offer both in-person and virtual tutoring. The shift to virtual tutoring, especially during COVID years, opened up new opportunities for us to reach students outside our immediate geographic area. The flexibility to offer both in-person and virtual sessions not only made tutoring accessible to more families but also ensured that students could continue their education uninterrupted, regardless of location. In today’s educational climate, our adaptability has positioned C & G Tutoring as a leader in providing customized, convenient learning experiences.
As the team grew to nearly 30 tutors, C & G Tutoring continued to attract highly skilled professionals who share a common passion for teaching. My team of tutors are not just experts in their fields but are also dedicated to helping students build confidence and achieve their academic goals. My growing team has been instrumental in maintaining our reputation for quality, ensuring that each student receives the individual attention they need to thrive.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2023, we faced challenges in finding enough high-quality math tutors. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to tell a parent or student that we simply don’t have the availability to help them. Recognizing this gap, I made the decision to pivot during the summer of 2024 by bringing on additional college-level math tutors. The results have been fantastic. Not only have we been able to support more students, but we’ve also eased the burden on parents while providing college students with a flexible job that fits around their studies. This shift has strengthened our services and reinforced our commitment to meeting the academic needs of our community.
Adding more college-level tutors truly aligns with our mission of supporting the next generation. By providing these students with meaningful, flexible job opportunities, we’re not only helping them gain valuable teaching experience but also reinforcing the cycle of learning and mentorship. At the same time, we’re ensuring that younger students receive the high-quality academic support they need to succeed. This approach strengthens our community and allows us to make an even greater impact on education in Northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In addition to running my tutoring business, I am a bilingual educator, having taught at middle, high school, and college levels. My dedication to education earned me the 2021 Young Professionals Educator of the Year award and recognition as one of the Top 25 Women in Business by the Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal in 2022. In 2024, I was named WBRE/WYOU’s Most Remarkable Woman. “Remarkable Women” is an initiative by Nexstar Media Group, designed to celebrate and honor the achievements of extraordinary women who have made a significant impact in their communities. The program highlights women who have gone above and beyond in various fields, such as business, education, healthcare, public service, and other areas, often overcoming challenges to inspire others with their leadership and accomplishments. In April of 2024, I spent time in Los Angeles, CA with the other Remarkable Women finalists which was an experience of a lifetime.
As an advocate for diversity, I am very involved in my family, career, community, and faith. I am a first generation college graduate and earned her master’s degree by the age of 25. I serve on the board of directors for the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Catholic Youth Center. For over a decade, I’ve raised money and participated in the SPCA Walk for the Animals. I’ve also volunteered my time to speak on topics that are important to me such as diversity, education and women of purpose at various places in our region.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
From my perspective a public educator, micro lessons will be the new pedagogy for best classroom practice. It is a highly effective teaching strategy that focuses on delivering small, concise lessons that cover one specific concept or skill. These lessons are typically short in duration, often ranging from just a few minutes to around 15 minutes, which allows students to engage with the material in a focused and manageable way. As a teacher, I find that micro lessons are particularly beneficial for keeping students’ attention and ensuring that they don’t feel overwhelmed by too much information at once. They also make it easier to assess understanding frequently and provide immediate feedback, which helps students stay on track with their learning. Additionally, micro lessons are adaptable and can be delivered through various formats, such as short videos, interactive activities, or quick discussions, making them an excellent tool for both in-person and online learning environments. This approach allows students to learn in bite-sized increments, reinforcing concepts as they go and making the overall learning process more engaging and effective for our 21st century learners.
