Today we’d like to introduce you to Fer Da Silva
Hi Fer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve been passionate about art. I always knew that art was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, because I’ve always been singing and acting as well. Painting has always been a part of my life through many moments. It wasn’t until I was older that I decided to fully focus on it and pursue it professionally. Over the years, I’ve experimented with different techniques and mediums, always seeking new ways to express myself. A key moment was when I decided to incorporate hearts into my work, which has since become something of a personal signature.
People often ask me why I paint hearts, and it actually comes from a period in my life when I was quite depressed. I always say that the only thing that kept me going was painting and writing songs. Since I was young, I’ve always heard the phrase, ‘you have to give love to receive love,’ and at that time, the optimistic, passionate, and joyful version of myself wasn’t there, but of course, I wanted to get him back. So I decided to believe in that phrase and told myself that I wanted to give love through my paintings, and when people received my art, it was my way of giving love.
At first, they weren’t hearts. It was all very abstract— I painted waves and everything was abstract, like waves crashing. And one day, two waves collided head-on and literally formed the first heart, and that’s how it all started. I always say that if I had known all the blessings this was going to bring me, maybe I wouldn’t have suffered so much. But at the same time, if I hadn’t gone through that, I might not have created this. So, everything happens for a reason, and I truly believe it’s been one of the greatest blessings.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with major brands and foundations, and I’ve been able to use my art to support important causes like cancer research. It’s been an incredible journey, and I feel like I’m just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any artistic career, I’ve faced many challenges. One of the biggest has been balancing my creative vision with the commercial side of art. Sometimes, the industry tries to push you in a direction that doesn’t necessarily reflect what you want to express, and maintaining your artistic integrity can be tough. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I went through a very difficult personal period that affected not just my daily life, but also my creative process. However, I believe those struggles made me stronger and helped me define my style and what I truly want to offer the world through my art.
Additionally, living in another country, far from where you were born, can sometimes be quite complicated. Entering a market where you don’t know anyone is challenging, but it’s also been wonderful. I can say that since I arrived in New York, my growth has been exponential. My art career really started in Miami, and things were going great there, but when I decided to make the move to New York, it was definitely a bit rough at first. But then, it became amazing. New York has been a fantastic platform; the city literally connects you to the world.
And yes, there have been many challenges throughout my career. There were plenty of moments where I couldn’t even afford to pay rent. But thankfully, as I always say, it’s all been worth it—every moment, every opportunity, and every decision that has brought me closer to becoming the artist I want to be. So, it’s really been a path full of blessings, fortunately.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work revolves around creating art that resonates with people on an emotional level. I specialize in painting hearts, which has become my signature. It’s more than just a symbol; it’s a representation of love, connection, and resilience. I’m known for these vibrant, bold hearts that are full of life and color, and each one carries a message of positivity and hope.
What I’m most proud of is being able to use my art to support causes that matter to me. For example, my collaboration with Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation has helped raise over $500,000 for cancer research, and that’s something that truly means a lot to me. Knowing that my work can contribute to something bigger than myself is incredibly fulfilling.
What sets me apart from others is my personal story and how I’ve translated it into my art. I come from a place of vulnerability and personal struggle, and I believe that honesty is reflected in my work. Every piece is a part of my journey, and I aim to make that connection with everyone who encounters my art. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about emotion, and I think that’s what makes my work stand out.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is probably when I first discovered my love for creating. I remember spending hours as a kid, sitting on the floor with a bunch of crayons, paints, and paper, just drawing and losing track of time. There was something so magical about being able to express myself visually without any limitations. It felt like a whole world of possibilities opened up for me, and that sense of freedom was unforgettable. I’d say that those early moments of exploration and creativity shaped the foundation for everything I do today.
I also remember when my grandmother would visit and stay with us for a few days. We would work with clay, making little ducks and all sorts of art-related things. I grew up in a house where my mom was always painting and creating as well, and for me, that was incredibly fun. Another memory I treasure is when the school year would start, and my mom had to buy us new coloring supplies. I loved those moments because I was always fascinated by coloring and everything related to art. Of course, my art classes in school were super fun, and anything that had to do with creating was a highlight for me. I think those memories are ones I really cherish.
