Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Miller
Hi Evan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My fondest memories of childhood are always outside. As a kid, I would be playing in my backyard and on my driveway or in different parks until sundown and even into the night. Over and over I would record myself doing “trickshots” with various objects and finding interesting ways to frame myself and the target in one shot. Over time I fell in love with exploring, new experiences, and photography. I was highly intrigued by what I didn’t know or experience yet. When I got into NYU Tisch School of the Arts, I had an opportunity to make a career out of my play that once started in a small town in Westchester, NY. During my time at NYU, I tried to see every corner of the big city and photograph and film anything I could, for hire or for fun. Eventually I earned a network of filmmakers and collaborators that spurred me into becoming a full time Director of Photography where I now shoot projects with famous artists and well known actors almost all the time as well as all around the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had say its almost never been a smooth path to where I want to go. It has always been a tough balance with many sacrifices along the way. However, what has been smooth is the consistent progression to bigger and more fulfilling projects leading closer and closer to what I want to achieve in this lifetime.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My role as a filmmaker is known as a cinematographer or Director of Photography (DP). I work with directors to execute a visual vision for their film, music video, or commercial. My goal is to use my technical knowledge of lighting and cinema cameras / lenses to match the emotion and style the director and I have discussed and curated over time. It is simply the intersection between idea and science. What is a huge part of the job that most people tend to forget about is the managerial side to being a DP. At the end of the day, almost half of the job is learning how to be efficient, a problem solver, and a great leader to the many people that work for you to help create that vision. I think what sets me apart is my ability to handle all of these tasks while maximizing efficiency. I’ve always been super organized and it continues to help me be super creative because of all the time I’ve saved through being super organized.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the fact that NYC is dense enough to be able to achieve and do so many tasks in one day. I can meet tons of interesting people and experience more in one day than any other city i’ve been to. However, what I like least is the lack of nature and cleanliness.
